WASHINGTON -- Ron Kirk, nominated as U.S. Trade Representative in the Obama administration, owes an estimated $10,000 in back taxes from earlier in the decade and has agreed to make his payments, the Senate Finance Committee said Monday.

The committee said the taxes arise from Kirk's handling of speaking fees that he donated to his alma mater, and for his deduction of the full cost of season tickets to the Dallas Mavericks professional basketball team.

The disclosure made the former Dallas mayor the latest in a string of top-level Obama administration appointees found to have underpaid their taxes, following Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Tom Daschle, who withdrew as candidate for Health and Human Services secretary. Nancy Killefer, Obama's pick for chief performance officer, also bowed out amid tax problems.

He won't pay penalties or interest though.

Obama's friends get a free ride on those.

Course, you don't post the part of the link that makes your point look bad.

Kirk routinely gave any speaking fees he earned to Austin College, the committee said, and did not list them on his tax returns.

Instead, the committee said he should have listed the fees as income, then claimed them as charitable donations. The estimated effect was to reduce Kirk's tax bill by an estimated $5,800, according to the report.

Kirk also deducted more than $17,000 as entertainment expenses for the cost of Mavericks' tickets. The committee said he substantiated about $9,900 of that amount, and will owe about $2,600 in taxes on the balance.

The committee said that last fall, Kirk amended his income tax return for 2006, paying an additional $2,188 in tax and $139 in interest after a notification from the Internal Revenue Service. The return was filed by a paid tax preparer, the panel added.

He wasn't dodging his taxes, he simply did a small portion wrong. He's human! Run for the hills cause nobody has ever ever gotten something wrong on their taxes!

So...all of Obama's appointees have terrible accountants?

It continues to amaze me how many people continue to defend people who don't pay their taxes... You can bet your ass if it was a Republican Robert would be on here bitching and moaning...

Maybe if Obama's appointees would pay their taxes we wouldn't be in this shape financially... I wonder what Obama's tax situation is like??????

THAT'S LIBERALS ARE HATED SO MUCH... THEY PLAY BY DIFFERENT RULES THAN EVERYONE ELSE!

Conservatives believe all tax cheats should get punished... Liberals believe only Republican tax cheats should get punished.

amazing isnt it?

The fact is that Obama rewards cheaters, period. How is this change? Wish he really had the balls he projected throughout his campaigning.

Monday it was former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk, President Obama's U.S. trade representative pick, who ponied up $9,975 in back taxes after congressional bean counters decided he should have reported as income $37,750 in speaking fees he donated to his college alma mater.
I don't understand why he'd have to pay taxes on money he donated.

Not all donations are tax breaks, for example most of the Police societies that collect for fallen officers have no tax exemptions either, nor fire departments or rescue squads. Why would a donation to a college be tax exempt?

Why wouldn't they be? I donate to schools and the donations are tax deductible.
