Single payer would replace private insurance probably with a Medicare style system with insurance companies providing only supplemental policies similar to Medicare supplements.

With the exception of a few quality of care incentives, the ACA is a law regulating insurance companies, purchasers and providers of insurance. With all that has been said about the ACA, it's primary impact on healthcare is increasing the number of people with insurance thus making healthcare services more accessible to more people.
