A new poll from the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press out yesterday shows that “progressive” is the most positively viewed political label in America, with 67 percent holding a positive view compared to just 22 percent who view the term negatively:

The poll found that the term progressive is viewed positively by a majority of all partisan groups — including 55 percent of Republicans, 68 percent of Independents, and 76 percent of Democrats.

I personally know people who proudly label themselves as "Progressives".

So here lately I have been asking them; "exactly what are you progressing to"?

Besides a blank stare or a puzzled look.

Not a single person has came up with an answer to my question.

Great question...the answer from these progressives mirrors the EU, and the former Soviet Union.

to Bad Progressive is just Code for Liberal, which is not nearly as popular :)

True. The real issue with a question like this which is taught in any sociology research 400 class is that the definitions are left to the responder.

Note where socialism scores? The responders probably understand what that means, to some extent.

The translate 'liberal' and 'conservative' to the two main parties.

Totally clueless to what 'libertarianism' is.

So, like any multiple choice, they pick, 'progressive.'

LOL Poor kid. Being forced into fiscal responsibility.

Hey I know what, why dont you collect less for SS. That will ensure its viability.

Damn you guys are rocket scientists.

People pick progressive because they actually think the 'progress' in the word means progress. Just like liberalism, lefties have screwed up another word.

I was going to mention that. Of course, I could also say "too bad liberal just code for progressive, which is much more popular." Equally true. This sort of labeling poll is pretty useless because there is no clear understanding of what the terms mean.

To progress toward more fairness and intelligence, and turn away again from greed, lies, suffering, and Republicanism. See sig.

Liberalism has been character assassinated by the Pub propaganda machine for twenty-five years, so it's not surprising the dupes are less approving.

Coincidentally, the approval number for socialism is also the number of Americans who know what it is (Nowadays, "social democracy", fair regulation to protect the citizens from the cruelty of savage capitalism- in other word's we already have it, just a stupid version running on default GOP lines)...

The root word for Progressive is progress and defined thusly:

1. a movement toward a goal or to a further or higher stage: the progress of a student toward a degree.

2. developmental activity in science, technology, etc., especially with reference to the commercial opportunities created thereby or to the promotion of the material well-being of the public through the goods, techniques, or facilities created.

3 advancement in general.

4. growth or development; continuous improvement: He shows progress in his muscular coordination.

5. the development of an individual or society in a direction considered more beneficial than and superior to the previous level.

Now the right can and will spin history and linguistics to fit their agenda, but to the informed it only makes them look dishonest.
