Like it or not, Members' (or Senators') most important acts are voting for the leadership of the house to which they have been elected. In practical terms, that means voting for John Boehner or Nancy Pelosi in the House, or Mitch McConnell or Harry Reid in the Senate. After that, individual votes on specific bills are a sham designed to deceive the voters: Those facing tough reelections are allowed to vote against bills they know will pass and vice versa. Don't be fooled into thinking there are "moderate" Democrats or Republicans; they all do what their Party bosses tell them to do.
