Plane missing since 1997 found in N. Michigan

^^^ Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but how would a body look after all this time if that plane didn't go into lake/river or even if it did? Its been 21 years now almost.

God bless you always!!!

P.S. The write up doesn't say if the plane went into a lake/river.

There are no stupid questions!

It depends on a bunch of climate like factors; temps, humidity, etc. Mummies for example come in "natural" and "unnatural" forms; Egypt actually has both, they've also found "natural" mummies in the high mountains. Hell, we have even found a frozen "natural mummy" of a mastodon from the last ice age.

Decay, which is the process that strips skin from bones, is usually a product of exposure to the air and bugs (like maggots and "ewww gross" stuff like that) If you look at like what would kill "eww gross" bugs; extreme heat or cold, you can make a general guess at the speed of decay/preservation of the body. There's a lot of science to it and specialists who study and interpret it; that's how the police know when a person died.

On land the decay is quicker, usually under two weeks when the temps are above freezing for that short length of time (a week or two). In the open ocean, precluding sharks eating the body, the flies and maggots aren't around so they say two to three weeks. Now I'm not positive, but in general I would presume that decay time in a lake/river makes very little difference from being on land because it's not a large enough body of water to deter the flies and maggots from finding the body.

I'm going to guess the bodies in this case would have decayed in around two weeks, so they probably only found bones. :/ (That's presuming the victims weren't burned up in the crash.)

^^^ Thank you. And you are right about the people maybe getting burned up too.

God bless you and their families and friends always!!!
