A surprise: Oprah pays a real cost for supporting Barack Obama
4/9/08 from Andrew Malcolm

--
Writing at Politico.com, he suggests the aging empress of TV has paid a price for getting into the dirty business of politics with and for her man Barack. By August last year, a CBS poll found her favorable rating had plunged from 74% to 61%, still twice as good as the president but nearly a 20% drop.

--
But 10 days after the campaign media explosion her favorable rating had dropped further to 55% and her unfavorable ratings for the first time climbed to 1 in 3.

A December ABC/Washington Post poll of Democrats found 8% were persuaded by her Obama endorsement, 82% said it wouldn't matter either way and 10% said her recommendation had turned them off Obama.

Now, Panagopoulos has discovered an AOL TV popularity survey of 1.35 million Americans that found 46% said the daytime TV host who "made their day" was Ellen DeGeneres while only 19% chose Winfrey. Forty-seven percent said they'd like to have dinner with Ellen, while only 14% chose Oprah.

Apparently, neither Ellen nor Oprah were asked who they'd like to dine with.

Panagopoulos draws the conclusion that in these days of pervasive media, in reality, celebrity endorsements run the real risk of costing the celebrity more than they benefit the endorsee. So celebs may want to think twice before hitting the stump.

In several interviews, Ed Klein has claimed that Michelle is hostile to Oprah....amazing to me, as Oprah put Obama in the White House.

"The Amateur: Barack Obama in the White House, written by former New York Times Magazine editor Ed Klein, charges that a highly distrustful Michelle accused Oprah of wanting to use the White House to pump up her TV ratings and that both women have traded insults about each other with close associates.

Michelle allegedly insulted Oprah's weight at one point, with Oprah claiming that the First Lady "hates fat people."

The book, due out this week, is excerpted in Sunday's New York Post.

When Obama gained Oprah's endorsement for the 2008 presidential election, the talk show queen enjoyed a close relationship with both the future president and his wife. But once the election was over, the author claims that Michelle and her staff rudely pushed Oprah aside, while the president remained close to the talk show titan.

In one particularly outrageous allegation, Klein writes that Michelle turned down Oprah's invitation to appear on her TV show to discuss childhood obesity, one of many causes adopted by the First Lady.

The book claims that Oprah then raged: “Michelle hates fat people and doesn’t want me waddling around the White House!”

Klein, a regular contributor to Vanity Fair, follows that allegation with another bombshell, writing that Michelle told her staff: “Oprah, with her yo-yo dieting and huge girth, is a terrible role model. Kids will look at Oprah, who’s rich and famous and huge, and figure it’s OK to be fat.”

One unnamed source in Klein's book even charges that Michelle believes Oprah allegedly encouraged Hillary Clinton to run against President Obama in the upcoming election."

If true, Michelle has to one of the most obtuse individuals on the political landscape.

Personally I think it was all the support for the socialist bullshit after the election that cost her.

she had months of shows trying to show how great social medicine was and how better other countries were.

Not like it's going to kill that 1% to lose some ratings.

Oprah Winfrey isn't quite holding her OWN

Rosie O'Donnell turns 50 today. But the milestone is less merry after Tuesday's final taping of her short-lived talk show on the Oprah Winfrey Network, ending another failed experiment in the channel's tumultuous history and raising new questions about its future.

In another troubling sign, 30 of OWN's 150 staffers were laid off Monday, and Discovery Networks (which co-owns OWN with Winfrey) installed new executives to run its business and programming operations.

Discovery has invested $310 million in OWN, but first-year ratings were merely even with Discovery Health, the channel it replaced. "I've never seen Discovery invest this much money in such a short period," says longtime cable analyst Derek Baine of SNL Kagan. "The ratings aren't coming in anywhere near as forecast. It would be a huge disappointment for Discovery to have to pull the plug, but it seems like that may be what they're considering at this point, given that they're taking control."

Oprah and lower ratings for her cable channel, well I am not suprised, she changed her format and this is the presidents fault? You all need a real life.

She talked him up for a good few years before he decided to run. In my opinion its why he won... all the loyal Oprah supporters following her lead.

That lovely Betty White supports him as well...could this mean the end of her career?

Rosie was so funny as a stand up comedian.

then she started thinking she was really important and smarter than the rest of us.

That's why OWN and Oprah failed. She started to be an advocate instead of an entertainer.

The OP is from 2008.

Yeah...so what's your point? ONE article in the OP is from 08 and the other is form 2012. Not to mention that the OWN network wasn't launched until 20011. So the data is STILL relevant.

She's just another entertainer who developed chronic narcissism along with success and is paying the price.

By the way folks. Hope all you guys have gone and seen the new Avengers movie. I HEAR it's good...AND I hear Obama loves it when you put more money in his pocket. See...half the cast, including Robert Downey Jr. paid 40,000 dollars a piece to have dinner with Obama at George Looney...Clooney's last week.

Downey, Clooney and the rest of the Hollywierd drones put about 5 million of YOU money right in the pockets of Obama's re-election fund in your name. ;~)
