Op-Ed: So is There a Palestinian State?

irosie91, et al,

Well, actually, our friend "PF Tinmore" is correct here. The Treaty of Sèvres is void. It was with the Ottoman Empire which disolved. It was not implemented at the time of the collapse. Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk) took power and disowned the treaty. It might as well had never been written.

oh ok thanks ----not impressed

Whatever the decision of the General Assembly regarding the admission of Israel, it would not change the verdict of history. The record would always reveal the true facts. The League of Nations and later the United Nations had sanctioned the invasion of Palestine by immigrants who had set up gangs to terrorize the legitimate inhabitants. They had sanctioned aggression against an innocent people, disappointed their natural aspirations and violated their inherent rights. The United Nations, by admitting Israel, would be offering shelter to a group which had not only imposed its rule by force on the people Palestine, but which had also driven from their homes almost a million of those people. A recent report in the New York Times had revealed that many of those who had attempted to return had been fired at. Finally, the Zionists had not respected the resolutions of the General Assembly and had given no definite assurances that they would do so in the future. They felt that they were absolved of such assurances because under the shield of power politics they would always find excuses and apologies. They had planned to realize their aggressive designs by invoking three pretexts: the establishment of a national home, the solution of the problem of the European displaced persons and the final fait accompli. In view of the historical precedents, tile United Nations must realize that the recognition of accomplished facts meant the sanctioning of aggression and injustice.

Thanks for the link.

Tinnie, I like your moral posts...I too believe that history will record what you say because its true...the Palestinians got screwed because they were defenseless...It is also true that the Jews got screwed by the Romans, and many others that followed...the Diaspora produced a disenfranchised people much like the Palestinians...Many Jews were also disenfranchised of their property and wealth in Islamic countries...History will also not forget these facts...The solution is what was offered 65 years ago by the UN: A two state solution and an internationalized Jerusalem in some kind of UN mandate and that would be Historic Justice.

Maybe, I'm off my rocker, but without a deal like that those two peoples will destroy each other eventually.

Two states would've seemed the obvious solution forty plus years ago when the Jewish occupation was limited to about twenty settlements and less than four thousand "civilians" residing in the occupied territories.

Since then, however, many "facts on the ground" have been created, leading to the conclusion that neither a two-state nor a democratic one-state solution is any longer viable:

"The 1993 Oslo Accords declared the final status of the West Bank to be subject to a forthcoming settlement between Israel and the Palestinian leadership. Following these interim accords, Israel withdrew its military rule from some parts of the West Bank, which was divided into three administrative divisions of the Oslo Accords..."

"Area A, 2.7%, full civil control of the Palestinian Authority, comprises Palestinian towns, and some rural areas away from Israeli settlements in the north (between Jenin, Nablus, Tubas, and Tulkarm), the south (around Hebron), and one in the center south of Salfit.[36]

"Area B, 25.2%, adds other populated rural areas, many closer to the center of the West Bank.

"Area C contains all the Israeli settlements, roads used to access the settlements, buffer zones (near settlements, roads, strategic areas, and Israel), and almost all of the Jordan Valley and the Judean Desert.

"Areas A and B are themselves divided among 227 separate areas (199 of which are smaller than 2 square kilometres (1 sq mi)) that are separated from one another by Israeli-controlled Area C."

A bantustan (also known as black African homeland or simply homeland) was a territory set aside for black inhabitants of South Africa and South West Africa (now Namibia), as part of the policy of apartheid."

EXCERPTs A/PV.207 11 May 1949 OFFICIAL RECORDS OF THE THIRD SESSION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY said:
  • It was logical that the United Nations, which had created the State of Israel, should also admit it to membership.
  • At the invitation of the President, the delegation of Israel took its place in the General Assembly.

Oh! Shouldn't palistanians shut up now?

Oh, the occupation of palistanian settlers, of course.
bantustan (also known as black African homeland or simply homeland) was a territory set aside for black inhabitants of South Africa and South West Africa (now Namibia), as part of the policy of apartheid."
In memorable words of Ben Ami, the mild leftie, "As I told you, no new map was presented to the Palestinians through Taba. But we worked on new internal maps that would reflect the new percentages. And when the ridiculous contention was voiced that what we were proposing to the Palestinians was cantons and that they would not have territorial contiguity, I went to [Egyptian President Hosni] Mubarak and showed him a map. As I recall, it was still the 8-percent map, a map of 8-92. Mubarak perused it with interest and asked aloud why the Palestinians were claiming they didn't have contiguity." If palistanians want to go on collecting international disability, it isn't jewish fault, of course, it's the palistanian occupation.
