“You know, I didn’t intend to do it,” Roosevelt told the New York Times. “But when I saw the thing there, I could not resist it.”

The plane was in the air before the crowd realized what had happened and who was aboard.

Teddy is one of those I would have loved to sit down and have a beer with. Gallantry in war, love of nature, gets shot and finishes his speech, and jumps onto a new fangled contraption known as an aero plane.

Two years later TR will be the victim of an attempted assassination. As a matter of fact it will be 110 years on October 14 that T.R. stayed on his feet during a speech with a .38 caliber bullet in his chest. They don't make 'em like that anymore.
