Public support for the Green Movement would have made things worse for them, and led to their delegitimization as a movement. They would have been seen by Iranians as stooges of the West. Thank goodness no GOPer was in the White House, or the Iranian regimes response would have been even bloodier.

The Green Movement was a Tehran-centric protest. The Islamic Republic has deep, wide support outside of Tehran. Thinking the 2009 protests in Tehran were signs of change would be like saying the 2003 anti-Iraq War protests in NYC and San Fran were a sign that Bush had no chance of victory in 2004.
