Oldest Monastery in Iraq Razed

The plan to wipe out everything that isn't Islamoterrorist approved appears to be going swimmingly.

IRBIL, Iraq (AP) — The oldest Christian monastery in Iraq has been reduced to a field of rubble, yet another victim of the Islamic State's relentless destruction of ancient cultural sites.

For 1,400 years the compound survived assaults by nature and man, standing as a place of worship recently for U.S. troops. In earlier centuries, generations of monks tucked candles in the niches and prayed in the cool chapel. The Greek letters chi and rho, representing the first two letters of Christ's name, were carved near the entrance.

Now satellite photos obtained exclusively by The Associated Press confirm the worst fears of church authorities and preservationists — St. Elijah's Monastery of Mosul has been completely wiped out.

Now, St. Elijah's has joined a growing list of more than 100 demolished religious and historic sites, including mosques, tombs, shrines and churches in Syria and Iraq. The extremists have defaced or ruined ancient monuments in Nineveh, Palmyra and Hatra. Museums and libraries have been looted, books burned, artwork crushed — or trafficked.

The monastery, called Dair Mar Elia, is named for the Assyrian Christian monk — St. Elijah — who built it between 582 and 590 A.C. It was a holy site for Iraqi Christians for centuries, part of the Mideast's Chaldean Catholic community.

Well, now we know, if you go to war in a foreign land, and then you COMPLETELY fuck up the post war period, THIS IS WHAT YOU GET.

Will we make the same mistake again? You bet your fucking ass we'll make the same mistake again, and you can bet it'll be some right wing nut who thinks going around invading people makes everyone feel good. The only problem is, it does make some right wing people feel good, not sure why, it sure as hell doesn't improve their life.
Yeah. Pretty outrageous to go and try to stop Islamo terrorists from killing and conquering.

Er.... who went into Iraq to try and stop "Islamo terrorists from killing"? Not Bush, that's for certain. Or are you re-writing history now?

I have one. Was it worth killing hundreds of thousands so this woman can have a purple finger? We made a bad place worse and even Gomer`s partner in crime Tony Blair admitted so. He and Bush gave the world ISIS.
Was it worth killing hundreds of thousands so some black guy could vote?
I don`t know. You may have to ask a resident of South Carolina about that. They started a war you know.
Yup....face it....you're gutless. You can't imagine anything worth fighting or dying for. Maybe it's because all of the fighting and dying was already done for you.

The word going around in the Middle East is that American freedoms are our greatest weakness. That's why they aren't willing to fight for it.

Huh, I never knew that Iraq was the 51st US state, until Obama pushed it out of the union. The things you can learn here.

Guess Iraq shouldn't have told us to leave, on the Bush plan.

Obama learned early that you can get what you want at a cheaper price using bribes rather than fighting for it. Especially if you use someone else's money.

Isn't it funny how it lasted so long without the slightest problem until the Americans interfered in the country.
In fact, every historic site destroyed by extremists has always been AFTER the Americans messed about.
The blame America first crowd made it by the 2nd post. While historical site are being destroyed, I hope the destruction of Mecca isn't far off.

Yours is a retarded assertion. You show us examples where Americans destroyed historical sites revered by civilized humanity. We won't even bomb radical Mosques where weapon caches are stored.

I didn't ask for that.
I claimed ALL attacks on ancient sites since 1945 have happened after American interference in that country (Except Israel's destruction of various things), with none before America "helped" the country in question..
I didn't claim America did it, just they caused it.

To prove me wrong is simple. Provide post 1945 examples of destructions by Islamic extremists in a place that America hadn't interfered in.

However, since you claim that doesn't happen, I will be happy to prove you're either a liar or uneducated.

The city, born on the banks of the Euphrates River 5,000 years ago and full of priceless archaeological treasures, was transformed into a U.S. military camp after the 2003 invasion with a heliport built among the ruins.

Nope. You bore me, troll.

I'm glad the truth bores you, but maybe next time you could just ignore me, rather than telling me. Because I don't give a damn.
I'm in touch with the truth. You are not. The truth is not boring, your trolling is.

Meanwhile, for someone who doesn't give a damn, how curious that you took the time to tell me what to do next time. LOL

You clearly aren't in touch with reality, you're talking complete nonsense.

The funny thing is that people go on about Democracy like it's something sacred. Yet when the US tried to get rid of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela, by a body that claims to be promoting Democracy, these same people were all for it.

The US wanted Democracy because it's easier to manipulate than a dictator.

And you're right, the Iraqis wanted the US out of Iraq, now the right is blaming Obama for taking the troops out of Iraq, as if he had a choice.
