OK Obama, you won reelection. Time to close Gitmo

Isn't that the case with every trial? Sometimes the guilty go free. But better to set the guilty free than keep the innocent in prison without a trial

Why would you think that any of them are 'innocent'?

Our country is built on the premise you are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. If the government thinks them guilty, provide your evidence or set them free

That is the way the United States used to operate

That's the court of law pertaining to our own citizens in domestic law, not for foreign terrorists in a war.

That small phrase "beyond a reasonable doubt" should not apply to such terrorists. Evidence to keep them locked up shouldn't have to be as concrete as that. You can't ask soldiers catching these asswipes to be forensic police at the same time on a battlefield.

The reason why Gitmo is open is because other allied nations won't accept or hold those individuals for us. The point of keeping them off of US soil is to KEEP them from the rights that our constitution grants once on the soil of this nation.

So with that motive, they decided to keep gitmo open simply because there is nowhere else they can put those inmates.

After ten years, nobody should be in Gitmo who has not been tried and convicted of a crime. If you have evidence against them, prove it in a court of law. If not, let them go

We are America, we used to set the moral high ground for other nations to follow. Holding men indefinitely without charges and without a fair trial is against our core values

Despite his plans to placate the liberal left in the 2008 election, Obama apparently realizes now that we need Guantanamo to house enemy combatants, abroad and domestic. I just hope he is allowing waterboarding as well.

If it keeps America safe, we should be willing to salt their intestines after dissecting them. This "moral high ground" that we speak of is just a weakness that the terrorists will exploit.

They're not civilians and they're not U.S. citizens. The Bill of Rights doesn't apply to them. The punishment for their attacks on us should be extremely cruel and inhumane, because that's the only language these scum can understand.

Al Qaeda is in chaos and their leader is dead. That was the aim all along and they don't need to imprison these people anymore. I say let them go back to their countries.

:eusa_pray:Well dude...Al Qaeda is still up and going. You kill a leader and they just get a new one. Stop thinking like Ubama...it could get you killed.

He lied about closing Gitmo the first time around what on earth makes you think he'll close it now, after all he needs someplace for all those people on his enemies list

He didn't lie...he was correct in trying to close Gitmo. Gitmo is a symbol of American denial of human rights and torture

What Obama found when he became president is that Republicans had poisoned the well. They had created a class of non-citizens who had their rights violated. It is tough to go to court with evidence obtained through torture or evidence from anonymous sources

The first thing Republicans did when Obama was elected was stir up the propaganda that Obama was going to house terrorists in your backyard. Congress quickly passed legislation preventing Gitmo prisoners from entering the US

So, what do we do?

Continue to imprison "enemies" without any evidence and without a right to respond to charges? Is that what America is about?

He didn't try to close Gitmo. He made a campaign promise that is all.

Won't happen.

He sure did.

Obama made an executive order to close Gitmo within a year on his first day in office. Then the Republican propaganda machine got in motion. Obama wants to house terrorists in YOUR backyard. Terrorists will run amok on Main Street USA.
Congress wimped out like they always do and passed legislation preventing moving Gitmo prisoners to the US

Guantanamo Bay detention camp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On January 22, 2009, President Barack Obama signed an order to suspend the proceedings of the Guantanamo military commission for 120 days and that the detention facility would be shut down within the year.[9][10] On January 29, 2009, a military judge at Guantanamo rejected the White House request in the case of Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, creating an unexpected challenge for the administration as it reviews how America puts Guantanamo detainees on trial.[11] On May 20, 2009, the United States Senate passed an amendment to the Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2009 (H.R. 2346) by a 90-6 vote to block funds needed for the transfer or release of prisoners held at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp

obama intended to follow what liberals wanted, close Gitmo and bring the the terrorists here with their own little green cards and work permits. He just realized that this would cause too much outrage among the non-liberals.

Close Gitmo, bring terrorists here for trial and let them go. That was the plan.

Double down on crazy rightwing fear mongering

Yawn.

Fact is he didn't close it did he? For two years Bam Bam owned the house and the senate with a super majority in the latter and he still didn't close Gitmo and you're making excuses and blaming the party that had absolutely no power to stop him. Typical

He failed to keep his campaign promise and you can't admit it.

I love it - "It was the Republican's fault in 2009!".....even though Dems had a super majority in Congress.

Priceless....

We need gitmo and torture sites like the one in poland in order to rendition, and hold anyone on the worlds battlefield, including american citizens, indefinitely. Obama has no plans of closing gitmo. He may however, in error, label any one of you a terrorist or a supporter/sympathizer, adn send you there. Indefinitely.
