Ohio Man Fatally Shoots Teen Son He Mistook for an Intruder

Trickle, trickle, trickle, in other words silly boy, you're more likely to be harmed by falling down some steps than by getting accidentally shot. And the accidental shootings is dropping while the deaths due to falls is on the rise.

Most Common Causes of Death Due to Injury in the US

So why would anyone be so paranoid that they shoot their own son? Statistically the chance of that person being somebody there to murder him is pretty much nil.

Is he a victim of the self defense industry that needs to make everyone think they are in great danger to sell their products?

I never claimed gun owners were perfect. But you are more likely to die at the hands of a doctor than a gun. And by a lot. How about working on getting the deaths due to doctors down to the gun accident rate and then we can talk about the gun accident rate. M'kay....

The gun rate is unique to this country. Most people will die without a doctor also. I don't know anyone who ever died from not having a gun.

You didn't answer my question. Why the heck would anyone be so scared they end up shooting their own son?

Why would anyone be so stupid they drive over their child? Stupid people do stupid things. Get used to it. You can't legislate stupidity away.

Has nobody yet wondered why the boy had to sneak into the basement, instead of boldly coming thru the front door of his own house?

Just a thought here to break up the monotony since the kid was only 14 and boys of that age just don't think, logically or otherwise.

Any of the accidental shootings because of 'intruder alert', the shooter should have spoken up to identify the 'danger' level. But of course, mistakes are made when you own a gun, but don't know how to handle a situation. Unfortunately these mistakes costs innocent lives for both the living and the dead. But it doesn't mean we should ban guns altogether or to call for even more gun control. What is needed, sorely needed in this country is 'well educated' gun owners. That in order to buy a gun, you are required to go thru intense training on the proper use of such a weapon, how to clean & maintain it, take it apart & put it back together, when to use it & when not. And take refresher training every couple of years thereafter.

I hope the dad is charged with manslaughter and serves time.

I would like to believe this was an accident but maybe not. I wonder the same about so-called "hunting accidents".

But yes, there should be consequences for other than the kid who was killed by his own father.

True, but as I tell my kids, don't sneak into the house; make your presence known ASAP. The boy could have sent his dad a text message, or came in through the front door.

He was 14 and not expecting his dad to shoot him. It was his own house after all. And like I said the chance of it being someone intent on murder is tiny compared to being friend or family. His dad also could have called out. Most intruders will get out if they know you have detected them. Then nobody gets shot.

in a country of over 357 million guns in private hands, the last numbers for accidental gun deaths from 2013..... 505.

Defensive uses of guns each year...1.5 million......

So no, the odds are not good that you are going to accidentally kill someone in your family.

If you hear something and investigate it much more likely to be a friend/family member than a murderous intruder. No reason to be so scared you are shooting at bumps in the night and shadows. Don't you agree these are completely avoidable?

There you go with false and meaningless numbers again. You think this guy had a gun from your recommendation?

And then there are the times...1.5 million that they aren't friends or family, but rapists, robbers and murderers............

an accident is more likely to kill you in a car than having a gun in the home.

There are only 1.2 million violent crimes each year and murder is tiny fraction of percent of them.

Lie……please show that stat of reported crimes. The crimes that are stopped before they happen do not become crimes. 1.5 million are stopped each year by people with guns, according to bill clinton.

Yes other countries have those also. Here you are however like 500% more likely to be shot and killed accidently than any other civilized country.

And in Europe you are more likely to be marched into a gas chamber…….

Except for the 1.5 million times a year, according to bill clinton, when it isn't nil….on top of your 1.2 million actual reported times it isn't nil…..

This is terrible. This is why a solid communication loop needs to be in place among your family members.

My prayers go out to these folks.

You should know who you are shooting at before you pull that trigger. The chance of it being a friend/family member is astronomically higher than some intruder intent on killing you.

Yup. Never point a gun until you know what your pointing it at.

Never put your finger on that trigger until you are ready to shoot and for God's sake know what you are shooting at.

This man obviously didn't do that. He just shot and killed his own son.

It is a small price to pay for our second ammendment rights
Here is a note for you to shove up your ass:

"We are keeping our guns"

Thank goodness
No better way to kill little children

More people were shot in the U.S. last year by toddlers than Muslim terrorists

Those were accidents. The Muslims terrorists intentionally murdered people.

There's a difference.
It relates to the threat of being killed

Remember people it is far more likely that intruder is friend or family rather than someone looking to murder you.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Police in Cincinnati say a man has fatally shot his 14-year-old son in their home, thinking he was an intruder.

Police say the man thought his son had caught the bus for school Tuesday morning, but the teen returned home soon afterward before 7 a.m. Police say the man heard a noise in the basement in the East Price Hill neighborhood, and checked on it with a gun in his hand. Police say the father fired after apparently being startled, hitting the boy in the neck.

Authorities say the father called 911 and the boy was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, where he died Tuesday morning.

And the life changing lesson here........don't shoot your kids.

Nope…..there are more Americans with guns…than ever before….13 million people carrying guns for self defense…so more people are out and about and able to resist crimes they would have been victims of in the past…..

Nobody claims 1.5 million lives saved. You are obviously lying. There are only like 14,000 murders. The most lives that could possible be saved is some small percent of 14,000.

And yes that intruder you imagine is far more likely to be somebody who doesn't mean you harm.

Idiot there are fewer crimes attempted. Wow you love to live in fantasy land.

I never claimed gun owners were perfect. But you are more likely to die at the hands of a doctor than a gun. And by a lot. How about working on getting the deaths due to doctors down to the gun accident rate and then we can talk about the gun accident rate. M'kay....

There are thousands of people murdered each year who died because they didn't have a gun to stop it….like the woman in New Jersey waiting to get her gun permit from the anti gun sherif…she was stabbed to death on her driveway….or the woman in Wisconsin who didn't have a gun…and her husband used a hatchet to murder her…..

You have no basis for that claim. At most you have a handful of examples that might have been saved. Don't forget many killed were armed,

I say 1.5 million violent crimes stopped and lives saved……every time there is a violent encounter there is a chance that the victim will be killed….everytime a gun is used to stop the encounter a life is potentially saved….or many lives…..did you trip and hit your head again?

With 1.5 million violent crimes stopped the percentage of lives saved would be greater than the total number of murders….
