His theory wouldn't work itself out, until Hubble showed him via a telescope that the universe was expanding and because of that, time stretched. And THAT gave Einstein the necessary data to make his theory work. Einstein said that was the bane of his existence. (His theory merely revealed what God had already wrought.)
