The most powerful person in Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s office is a tech millionaire with homes in the West Village and Maryland, who is behind a set of inter-related companies raising ethical eyebrows with good-government groups.

Saikat Chakrabarti, 33, is the hard-left freshman’s chief of staff — the brains behind initiatives like the Green New Deal and the founder of a trio of companies that catapulted Ocasio-Cortez into Congress.

But those companies raise red flags with government-watchdog groups who say Chakrabarti may have skirted campaign finance law.

Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign paid Justice Democrats, a Tennessee-based PAC founded by Chakrabarti, a total of $41,108.59 for “campaign services” and “strategic consulting” in 2017 and 2018, Federal Election Commission filings show.

But PACs are not vendors and cannot provide more than $5,000 a year worth of services for any single candidate, according to FEC regulations. If candidates go above this amount, they need to seek advice directly from the FEC.

“They believe their cause is so great that they don’t have to play by the rules,” said Tom Anderson, who heads up the Government Integrity Project at the National Legal and Policy Center in Virginia, a conservative watchdog group. “They believe that they are above campaign finance law.”​

He then diverted more than $1 million into two of his companies that did campaign work, skirting reporting requirements, said the complaint by the National Legal and Policy Center.

“These are not minor or technical violations. We are talking about real money here,” said Tom Anderson, director of NLPC’s Government Integrity Project. “In all my years of studying FEC reports, I’ve never seen a more ambitious operation to circumvent reporting requirements.”

He added that Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, “has been quite vocal in condemning so-called dark money, but her own campaign went to great lengths to avoid the sunlight of disclosure.”

The PAC money went to Mr. Chakrabarti’s Brand New Congress LLC and Brand New Campaign LLC, entities that unlike PACs and candidate campaigns do not have to report or itemize their spending.

The Ocasio-Cortez campaign also was paying Brand New Congress LLC for “strategic consulting.”

Mr. Chakrabarti, a Silicon Valley tech millionaire who delved into far-left politics, was instrumental in the long-shot win for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez win over veteran politician Rep. Joseph Crowley and was rewarded with the chief of staff job.

Another FEC complaint by filed last week by the Coolidge Reagan Foundation alleged Brand New Congress PAC was involved in a scheme to funnel money to Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s live-in boyfriend, Riley Roberts.

At the same time Mr. Roberts, a 29-year-old web developer, received payments totaling $6,0000 as a “marketing consultant” for the PAC, the Ocasio-Cortez campaign was paying Brand New Congress LLP for strategic consulting.

I agree, the DNC has seen all they want from AOC, but I don’t think she’ll go quietly. She is cutting her own political throat. The powers that be in the DNC can’t possibly trust her enough to bring her into the inner circle. It’s a shame really, I rather enjoy her.

It doesn't look good on its face, but there may be no violations here. It just depends on the details and what work the for-profits were doing. This isn't as unusual as it seems. When I worked for a PAC, there was a door connecting us to a for profit political consulting firm. When the front doors were unlocked, that door was locked. When the front doors were locked, that door was open. I didn't work on the money side of things, but I overheard enough here and there to know that there were lots of loopholes and with each one, the PAC I worked for had no problem dancing on the foul lines without crossing them. It certainly violated the spirit of the laws if not the black letter words of them.

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her chief of staff Saikat Chakrabarti obtained majority control of Justice Democrats PAC in December 2017, according to archived copies of the group’s website, and the two appear to retain their control of the group, according to corporate filings obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation. If the Federal Election Commission (FEC) finds that the New York Democrat’s campaign operated in affiliation with the PAC, which had raised more than $1.8 million before her June 2018 primary, it would open them up to “massive reporting violations, probably at least some illegal contribution violations exceeding the lawful limits,” former FEC commissioner Brad Smith said.

Ocasio-Cortez never disclosed to the FEC that she and Chakrabarti, who served as her campaign chair, controlled the PAC while it was simultaneously supporting her primary campaign, and former FEC commissioners say the arrangement could lead to multiple campaign finance violations. The group backed 12 Democrats during the 2018 midterms, but Ocasio-Cortez was the only one of those to win her general election.
