Obama's Use of Complete Sentences Stirs Controversy

November 20, 2008

WASHINGTON - In the first two weeks since the election, President-elect Barack Obama has broken with a tradition established over the past eight years through his controversial use of complete sentences, political observers say.

Millions of Americans who watched Mr. Obama's appearance on CBS's 60 Minutes on Sunday witnessed the president-elect's unorthodox verbal tick, which had Mr. Obama employing grammatically correct sentences virtually every time he opened his mouth.

But Mr. Obama's decision to use complete sentences in his public pronouncements carries with it certain risks, since after the last eight years many Americans may find his odd speaking style jarring.

According to presidential historian Davis Logsdon of the University of Minnesota, some Americans might find it "alienating" to have a president who speaks English as if it were his first language.

"Every time Obama opens his mouth, his subjects and verbs are in agreement," says Mr. Logsdon. "If he keeps it up, he is running the risk of sounding like an elitist."

The historian said that if Mr. Obama insists on using complete sentences in his speeches, the public may find itself saying, "Okay, subject, predicate, subject predicate -- we get it, stop showing off."

The president-elect's stubborn insistence on using complete sentences has already attracted a rebuke from one of his harshest critics, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.

"Talking with complete sentences there and also too talking in a way that ordinary Americans like Joe the Plumber and Tito the Builder can't really do there, I think needing to do that isn't tapping into what Americans are needing also," she said.

Must be a joke. If not it is further proof that liberals think most Americans are stupid as shit.

We don't think that most Americans are stupid as shit.

Just the ones who voted for Bush.

The ones who voted for Bush twice, of course, make shit look like Einstien in comparison.

No, not most Americans, mostly Bush and his inability to speak coherently. Quit playing your damn card that liberals think badly of most Americans since most Americans are liberals.

You say that cause you were one of the idiots who voted for Bush twice. Personally I think this is hilarious.

Admit it Sarg, you fucked up twice son!!!!! You voted for the monkey

Given the choice in 2000 and 2004, Bush was the ONLY sane choice. And that would be You Liberals fault. Especially in 2004. All you had to do was nominate a reasonable person for the position and the election was yours, instead you picked Kerry.

So would it make them happy if Obama spoke using Ebonics????

I was secretly hoping that at the end of his acceptance speech Obama would tell the people that from now on he should be referred to as the HNIC.

And then crip walk off the stage ...

It is a joke. This guy's satire pieces run in my local paper every day. I read it a few days ago and thought it was hysterical.

As I reread my posts often, and cringe when I note the mistakes I so often make, I find myself sympathetic to those whose every utterance is subject to the scrutiny of the press.

Uh oh. Borowitz didn't specifically credit Barack's Teleprompter. You guys better hope he hasn't pissed it off again...:lol::lol:

LOL

So it is your contention that Liberals "forced" you to vote not just once, but twice, for the worst president in modern history?

Priceless! And you call yourself a member of the Party of Personal Responisibility?

Was a liberal with you at the voting booth, pointing a gun at your head and forcing you to choose Bush? Or didn't you notice there were other choices on your ballot for third party candidates, if you liked neither Bush nor Gore?

I thought Jimmy Carter was the worst speaker in American history and then along came Bush. Isn't he supposed to be the son of George H. W. Bush who is himself a great speaker? Must be the drugs.

What a whining bunch of crybaby rationalizing bullshit.

You voted for the most incompetent POTUS in US history...twice!

Now you want to blame the liberals for your inability not to see that Bush was wholly unqwualified for that post?

I always knew that middle class people who voted R were stupid enough to fall for the lies that they were being fed by very competent liars, but I never thought they were too cowardly to accept reponsibility for their own actions.

It's one thing to have been fooled once, but twice?
