Anyway -- the more Obama talks like this, the better his reelection chances will become. The liberal voters that gave him his victory in 2008, and boycotted the 2010 election thus throwing it to the GOP, will determine who wins in 2012 by whether or not they vote.

Comparatively speaking, no. Per capita economic growth from 1940 to 1980 exceeded what we had from 1900 to 1940 by more than two to one. It also exceeded what we've had since 1980 by about the same margin.

It makes sense if you think about it. Bureaucratic socialism Soviet-style is one extreme; laissez-faire capitalism pre-Depression American style is the other -- someone not bound by ideology might expect that a mix of the two, incorporating the best features of both while avoiding the problems, would work better than either extreme. Turns out that's the case.
