This will result in a huge black market as millions of NYers go somewhere else and buy cigs at $5 a pack and resell then in NYC at say $7.

Aug. 10 (UPI) — The New York City Council voted this week to raise the minimum price of a pack of cigarettes to $13 and banned their sales in pharmacies.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio personally introduced the plan to city lawmakers in April and is expected to sign the legislation, reported the New York Daily News.

The minimum price for a pack of cigarettes in the Big Apple is currently $10.50, while the average price is $11.23.

there's already a black market.

me and a buddy, that's from nyc, are talking about hitting up an Indian casino and making a run up there.

probably won't, but it's fun to think about it.

I get my cigs at the rez. Here in town, they are 59 bucks per carton. At the rez, 28 bucks. So when I go, I buy 4 cartons and usually hafta buy other cartons for other people here in town who pay a bit extra for my gas.

How time change. I used to buy cigs for a dollar a carton in international waters on board ship, then sell them for 2 bucks a carton in American port. Pretty good return on investment in early '60s for a poor sailor since I used to buy quite a few cartons at a time.

13 dollars a pack? Wow talk about unfair taxation. Who does that hurt the most? Not the "rich" they can afford it and most do not smoke.

The modern day cigarette black market in New York City started back in the early 2000s and it's a multi-million dollar a year business now. The idiots in city hall are shooting themselves in their collective feet by continuously raising the cigarette tax and driving business to the black marketeers. Of course if they're getting kickbacks it makes perfect sense.............

Of course they're getting kickbacks. No politician ever does anything because it's the right thing to do. All they want to know is - which side will pay me the most.
