NY 26th Race is Called for Hochul

The Republicans want to privatize Social Security and Medicare, so their buddies on Wall Street can get their hands on all the delicious retirement money.

The American people have figured it out, and the Republicans are going to get trounced in 2012.

If you think medicare will exist for another generation as it currently is, than you aren't paying attention. We either choose to change it or we run out of money and it no longer exists.

Personally, I prefer the first one.

No one’s saying otherwise. The problem was Ryan didn’t want to ‘change’ Medicare, he wanted to get rid of it.

Republicans would be foolish and naïve to ignore this election result.

ha!they can be just as stupid as the dems post-McDonnell ....

I lived there for 5 years during college (on and off campus-including 3 years outside of the college area), and it never came off as very conservative to me. Fairly Republican-yes. But pretty moderate as well. I think this is the biggest problem Ryan's budget is going to face. I think America is more towards the center than both parties think it is.

So for the first time in god knows how long a dem won there and somehow they are center? Really? :cuckoo:

Sorry, I forgot....

Thank you, Paul Ryan.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you....

They had some "Tea Party" candidate in that race probably paid for by the libs. This race had nothing to do with Ryan, Democrat talking points, If Ryan ran against Obama he'd kick Obama's ass

You are living in a fantasy world.

The Republicans have stepped in pure shit, and they are going to get stomped like a rat in the closet.

‘Detached from Reality’ post of the night.

You guys are grasping at straws. You get all happy over a irrelevant win in New York whole you dismiss a Republican landslide only a few months ago ....If only Ryan would run, a man of substance not a scripted self absorbed demagogue like Obama. Shows how desperate you really are.

Pretty awesome news. The Ryan Medicare proposal is the worst possible issue for a Republican to tackle.. Of course the right is already spinning this as a win because of a 3rd candidate.. But he drew votes from both candidates. True story

Democrat takes GOP House seat in New York

In a special House election carefully watched by national political strategists, Democrat Kathy Hochul won what had been a Republican seat Tuesday in upstate New York, lifting Democrats’ hopes for the 2012 campaign.

As her campaign’s centerpiece, Hochul attacked changes in the Medicare program proposed by House Budget Committee chairman Paul Ryan.

“I will fight any plan that tries to decimate Medicare — that is something people in this district feel passionately about and I do as well,” Hochul said in a debate last week with Republican opponent Jane Corwin, who supported the Ryan budget plan.

The GOP is TOAST in 2012!

Nice.

The 2010 election was an outlier mainly won due to Republican misdirection. They made a big deal about Obama's plan to cut 500 Billion from Medicare (Which was to be done through removing redunancy and waste) and promoted "Death Panels". That and a weak economy got them seats.

Now that they are in..what do they do? Break Unions, try to dismantle Medicare, try to ban abortion and/or Tax it to death, and in the case of Jan Brewer..really did kill people via a de facto Death Panel.

Over reach. And Ryan.

Democrats could not hope for better.

And the Osama thing didn't hurt either.

Boehner will go down as one of the worst Speakers ever. What a disaster!

And remember: NY 26 is an ultra-Conservative district which has had one Democrat since 1953.

If Republicans can't hold that seat, they are in for huge losses in 2012.

Tea party got nine, GOP got 43, Democrats got 47.

Just a plurality. If you want to make something of it, as a rejection of the Republican mood of smaller government and less taxes, than she should have got a majority. As it was, she got the normal level of Democrat vote, which is lower than the normal level of Republican vote.

you might want to thank the Tea party for this victory. On the merits of her ideas, it was a thumping loss.

Democrat Kathy Hochul swept to victory Tuesday night in a closely watched Congressional election in New York state, which turned into a proxy battle on a House Republican proposal on Medicare.

The race in New York's 26th Congressional district was to fill the seat of former Republican Congressman Chris Lee, who resigned over pictures and e-mails of him trying to find a date on Craigslist.

The seat had been considered safe for Republicans, who had held the district for more than four decades.

Democrats claimed the victory "had far reaching consequences around the country" over Medicare, while a top Republican warned trying to "predict the future based on the results of this unusual race is naive and risky."

With nearly 90 percent of precincts reporting, Hochul has 48 percent of the vote, Republican Jane Corwin 42 percent, self-proclaimed Tea Party candidate Jack Davis nine percent, and Green Party candidate Ian Murphy one percent.

The crowd chanted "Medicare, Medicare" during Hochul's victory speech in Buffalo, after the issue became the center of the once-little talked about race.

Hochul and Corwin attacked each other over it, with both campaigns, parties and outside groups flooding the airwaves with television commercials. Many of the ads spotlighted the political battle over House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan's plan to drastically cut federal spending by reforming Medicare.

Hochul told supporters in her speech voters "looked beyond party labels ... for a message they believed in."

The Eric County clerk vowed to help balance the budget "the right way, not on backs of our seniors."
