Non-partisan reality check

This is a non-partisan video produced by an accountant, Hal Mason, retired
after 27 years with IBM. He looks at the budget, its revenues and expenses,
and very simply illustrates the problem. It’s only a few minutes long.

WTF is Hal Mason...he could be a kitchen cook for all we know.

His words mean NOTHING!

Why do you ppl give so much credence to any 2-bit a-hole that says something you agree with?

Don't you realize how foolish, ridiculous and non-credible you make yourselves seem?

Governments don't function like businesses.

Don't you wish they did? Bi partisan shot here.

You didn't do the job. Fired!

I really wish we could. Both sides of the aisle down south. We truly off people up here lately.

And it's good to flush them. We just had this really monumentally cool election where the people completely threw out the liberals and went for the NDP. It was awesome.

Long story for tomorrow. But it can be done.

Good video. The government is spending more than it takes in. He pointed out everybody would have to be taxed at 50% to pay for current spending.
Shit we can't go on like that.

can you afford to pay 50% tax so the government can keep up with current spending?

That's a non-starter...no one has that in their platform.

Why even bring it up?

C'mon, let's be serious here.

No one has a platform on 50% tax, however Hal pointed out to keep up with current spending everybody would have to pay 50% tax. The government is spending more than it takes in. If you had watched the video instead of bitching about about you would understand this.

There will always be more debt than money to pay it off.

If you don't know why that is then you seriously don't understand our economic system.

Where does this "new" money come from, kiddies?

THINK, people, think.

I certainly don't think that is true and history 100% disagrees with you.

Except for about a year during 1835-1836, the United States has continuously held a public debt since the US Constitution legally went into effect on 4 March 1789. Debts incurred during the American Revolutionary War and under the Articles of Confederation amounted to $75,463,476.52 on January 1, 1791. From 1796 to 1811 there were 14 budget surpluses and 2 deficits. There was a sharp increase in the debt as a result of the War of 1812. In the 20 years following that war, there were 18 surpluses. The United States actually paid off its debt entirely in January 1835, only to begin accruing debt anew by 1836 (the debt on 1 January 1836 was $37,000).[2][3]

Another sharp increase in the debt occurred as a result of the Civil War. The debt was just $65 million in 1860, but passed $1 billion in 1863 and reached $2.7 billion by the end of the war. During the following 47 years, there were 36 surpluses and 11 deficits. During this period 55% of the national debt was paid off.

The next period of major increase in the national debt took place during World War I, reaching $25.5 billion at its conclusion. It was followed by 11 consecutive surpluses and saw the debt reduced by 36%.

Social programs enacted during the Great Depression and the buildup and involvement in World War II during the F.D. Roosevelt and Truman presidencies in the 1930s and 1940s caused the largest increase – a sixteenfold increase in the gross public debt from $16 billion in 1930 to $260 billion in 1950. When Roosevelt took office in 1933, the national debt was almost $20 billion; a sum equal to 20 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP). During its first term, the Roosevelt administration ran large annual deficits between 2 and 5 percent of GDP. By 1936, the national debt had increased to $33.7 billion or approximately 40 percent of GDP.[4] Gross debt relative to GDP rose to over 100% of GDP to pay for the mobilization before and during World War II.

Notice the trend in where a ton of the debt comes from? I do. As I have said many times, the government has a spending issue not an income issue. I wish it had an income issue so severe that it reduced its ability down to defense spending and maintaing government (courts, law, etc)

EDIT: That instance of paying off the debt completely and of all the running surpluses was done WITHOUT A FUCKING FEDERAL INCOME TAX WASSUP

What's non-sense about it? The problem can't be fixed with people like you calling facts non-sense.
If you stopped spending on Defense, and other things such as law enforcement. You're left with interest and social programs with those alone you still can't pay the debt off.

You clearly did not watch the video, which is unfortunate because I think you are quite capable of understanding it.

And this is why :You and the producer of the video have converged upon both the problem and solution, "no one has that in their platform" = No representation in Washington is attempting to resolve the issue of spending more than revenues pay for, or will ever pay.
