Is justice in Calif blind (to common sense)?

SAN DIEGO – A 71-year-old terminally ill man has been sentenced to 21 years in a California prison for rolling his wheelchair into a San Diego bank and holding it up with a replica BB gun.

Judge Jeffrey Fraser said Friday that Peter Lawrence could theoretically get out of prison at age 90, when he would no longer be a threat to the public.

According to City News Service, Lawrence told the judge he robbed the Chase bank of more than $2,000 this summer because he felt hopeless after being diagnosed with a myriad of medical problems.

Defense lawyer Kenneth Kaminiski says his client did not want to harm anyone. Kaminiski says Lawrence wanted to get caught so he would not have to live on the streets.
Prosecutors said Lawrence was a danger because he could use a real weapon in the future

So sick people should not be held legally responsible for their criminal behavior?

So sick people should not be held legally responsible for their criminal behavior?

Calif is going broke, and threatening to release thousands of criminals back into society. Their prisons are overcrowded, partly because of one size fits all 3 strikes sentencing laws.

Common sense tells me that the man had an emotional meltdown, and lost it. 21 years for a robbery with a fake gun in a wheelchair? :cuckoo:

So you DO think a sick person should be excused for breaking the law, good to know.

i dont think its as much as sick people being excused ...as it is...mercy.....showing mercy....with that said....the lockebie bomber was shown mercy and look at the public outcry....should the justice system be without mercy?

And he is not dead. He should have remained in prison. He murdered almost 300 people. He went home to a Hero's welcome.

As for this guy, he stated he wanted to be locked up. If the DA simply let him go we have no reason to believe he would not have gotten a real gun and escalated his attempts to get locked up.

HE ROBBED A BANK. He did so with what the employees and customers believed was a firearm. He is where he belongs.

I think he needed to secure his 3 meals a day and shelter, and did so. Medical care to boot. ;)
