If we are going to have any understanding of any potential legislative changes that may be coming, we need know how things stand now, and why firearms receive so much legislative attention. So let’s go back a ways. All the way back to the 1930s.

Back then, mobsters and bootleggers received a fair amount of media scrutiny. Running liquor was a (sometimes) profitable business, and some of the parties involved armed themselves with revolvers, pistols, modified shotguns and early machine guns (like the Thompson Model 1927 A1).

No question the laws that say anyone convicted of a felony cannot have a gun are racist in that they disarm per capita far more blacks than whites. By the Nixon era the Republicans were hurting and took in a lot of McGovern Democrats when the party virtually split up at the 68 Democratic convention.

The party of lincoln suddenly had this strange states rights platform Southern Democrats loved or wish they loved a decade earlier so Washington could not force desegregation on the south. Strange for Lincolns party of ultimate federal power over states I know.

So, our last 3rd party candidate to win a state and uneasy rider must be read about.

The 60's were very important for our political parties and did create that odd split in which the good ol boys left the Democrats. Tons of strange examples. McGovern getting shot, the Klansman. Weird stuff.
