New York City seeks to ban big sodas from restaurants, food carts

(CNN) -- New York City officials are proposing banning the sale of large-size sodas and other sugary beverages at restaurants and food carts.

"More than half of NYC adults (58%) are overweight or obese," Mayor Michael Bloomberg tweeted Thursday. "We're doing something about it."

Ah yes, another victory for the "pro-choice" crowd...

Well done guys!

This is what a communist country does. We are supposedly a free country but we are losing them freedoms because of the progressives in our country

This is not going to stop anyone from buying more then one soda. If someone wants to drink soda and get fat it is their business just like if a smoker wants to smoke

Next, big fat people will be illegal. To much extra weight will be cause for burning more fuel on public buses and airplanes.
Obeast people , and obeasity will be illegal.
This will be the next step in this anti obeasity campaign.
Mark my words.!?

Crazy idea here, but what if we just let people decide for themselves what they want to drink and how much of it? And while we're at it, why not get all levels of government out of regulating the health of Americans? I mean the obesity epidemic should be proof enough that their approach has been entirely counterintuitive and a complete and embarrassing failure.

Budgets at all levels are in dire circumstances, and the people elected (and sometimes not elected) to deal with those circumstances are sitting around fretting over how much soda one should purchase (or in my case, in LA, whether or not one should be using plastic bags at the grocery mart). Maybe there's connection there, somewhere. . .

:dunno:

We're saved! Bloomberg to ban sugared sodas over 16 oz.

5/31/12 By Rick Moran

Mayor Michael Bloomberg - warrior against obesity -- announced a ban on sugared drinks over 16 ounces to take effect in March of this year.

New York Times:

"Obesity is a nationwide problem, and all over the United States, public health officials are wringing their hands saying, 'Oh, this is terrible,' " Mr. Bloomberg said in an interview on Wednesday in the Governor's Room at City Hall.

"New York City is not about wringing your hands; it's about doing something," he said. "I think that's what the public wants the mayor to do."

A spokesman for the New York City Beverage Association, an arm of the soda industry's national trade group, criticized the city's proposal on Wednesday. The industry has clashed repeatedly with the city's health department, saying it has unfairly singled out soda; industry groups have bought subway advertisements promoting their cause.

Go find a non bottled water drink that doesnt contain high fructose corn syrup.

Its not what we are choosing. Its the fact that no mater what choice we make, its got the same chemical in it that causes problems.

The FDA just HOURs before Bloomberg announced he was going to try for the ban, ruled that big business couldnt relabel high fructose corn syrup as "corn sugar"

FDA praised for rejecting 'corn sugar' label - The Hill's Healthwatch

because its NOT sugar.

And apparently we can stop blaming people for choosing high fructose corn syrup laden products because it makes then stupid just drinking the stuff

Heres an thought...instead of raising taxes or banning certain sizes of drinks, how about we BAN high fructose corn syrup and just use plain old sugar?

Or, rather than banning corn syrup (which is certainly bad for you), how about we quit subsidizing people who grow corn and get rid of the tariffs on sugar? Or, perhaps even better, we take some responsibility for our own health and simply stop drinking things that are bad for us? If you don't want to ingest corn syrup, sugar, or anything else then the solution is pretty simple: Don't.

We're saved! Bloomberg to ban sugared sodas over 16 oz.

Donald Trump and Michael Bloomberg prove that rich people can do and say really stupid things outside their areas of expertise.

Want to know how the restaurants and convenience stores are going to get around this 16 oz. limit?

"Free refills!"

"Buy two 16 oz. Slurpees, get a third one FREE!! And we will throw in this 48 oz. decorative empty cup that you can do whatever you want with!"

Indeed, food producers save as much as 30% in ingredient costs by opting for cellulose as a filler or binder in processed foods, according to a source close to the processed food industry who spoke with TheStreet on the condition of anonymity.

We shouldnt have to learn to avoid it. Food that has been deemed fit for human consumption shouldnt KILL you. It should nourish you.

As Mark said himself:

the intake of HCFS has helped unleash a plague of obesity, insulin resistance and even heart disease. I’m no fan of sugar in general, but HFCS has an especially menacing profile

HFCS has generally added to Americans’ intake of sugars rather than replaced them. In other words, we now eat almost as much regular sugar as we used to, but now we inhale a whole other stream of sweetener in our daily diet, most of which is “hidden” in common processed foods.

Finally, the kicker? “USDA Organic” foods can contain them as well. HCFS made from organic corn is, well, organic! It’s considered a natural ingredient. Never mind that it’s one of the least healthy things you can put in your body.

The bottom line: the pervasiveness of HCFS is yet another reason to avoid processed foods entirely.

We have warning labels for cigarettes. If we arent going to ban HFCS, then I want warning labels on every single product that contains it.

Well that's not going to happen since corn is one of the government's favored industries, so you have no choice but to avoid it.

Yes what a job by Blooperberg the poster boy for r.i.n.o. group. Lol gender abortion is OK though but don't drink soda smh we are under a Marxist attack. Only lazy bums or idiots want or let people make choices for them.

If Bloomberg really wants to accomplish taking some weight off New Yorker's, he should raise the price of public transportation. At least that doesn't fly in the face of personal freedoms.
