Archaeology has solved many of the mysteries of the ancient past. However, the evidence that sometimes explains the existence of ancient structures simply does not exist. Here are some mysterious ancient structures that continue to confound the experts today.
Puma Punku
Puma Punku is part of a large temple complex near Tiwanaku, in western Bolivia. According to experts, the city was already abandoned when the Incas conquered the area in 1470. Deserve to be mentioned is the technical skill and precision shown on these stones are amazing. The finely cut doorways and remaining stone blocks bear no chisel marks and many interlock with very fine precision. However, nobody really knows who build puma punku, and even its age is a matter of debate. Some scientists say the buildings date back to about 500 BC, but other believe that the mysterious site is much older.
Nan Madol
This city of Nan Madol is built on a reef just off the shore of Pohnpei Island in Micronesia. Instead of foundations, the city's buildings are built on artificial stone and coral platforms. The city consists of nearly 100 artificial islands of coral fill and stone separated by a narrow canal and protected by an external seawall. Archaeologists believe that part of the city has existed for more than 1,000 years and was once the ceremonial, political and residential center of the local Saudeleur people. Little is known about how its builders were able to move such massive amounts of stone without levers, pulleys, or metal.
