Governor Rick snyder signs bill giving broad new powers to emergency financial managers

LANSING, Mich. (WXYZ) - Governor Rick Snyder has signed a bill giving broad new powers to emergency financial managers appointed by the state of Michigan to run struggling cities and schools, including the ability to terminate union contracts.

The bill was signed as thousands of union protesters rallied inside and outside the Capitol to protest the bill.

Vulnerable cities like Ecorse, Highland Park and Pontiac could get Emergency Financial Managers. This problem is so serious across this state, more than 60 communities that are on a Michigan Department of Treasury special watch list. Hamtramck is once again in danger.

In Hamtramck, City Manager Bill Cooper’s position was created out of the financial crisis. The city fell in to receivership but emerged five years ago. He says the city fell in to debt when the emergency manager was here. He says they are still digging out from under it. “The Emergency Manager does the short-term fixes and leaves, a lot of them don't look five or ten years down the road.”

65 people have been trained as Emergency Managers and Cooper says the state is preparing to train 150 more.

How can the state grab power from the municipalities when the state granted their power to begin with? The state created them, the state can destroy them if they wanted.

the local offices have always had their power delegated to them directly from the states.

Yep, We have had a few cities here in Michigan. Where the State Police took over. Arrested half the local cops and Officials. Unlike the States to Fed Relationship. Municipalities are not independent Powers. They do not share power with the States, they derive their power from the states.

Expect to see more and more of this around the country. The left will scream and yell and call it a war on Unions, and to a point they will be right. The plain simple Truth is these budget problems are massive, and state after state. A huge driving part of the Problem is Wages and Benefits, Pensions, Etc paid to state employees.

You can not cut state budgets and not cut the amount the state pays its employees, or cut the number of Employees. As believe it or not, Wages and Benefits is the least essential thing states spend their money on. What would you have them cut instead? Food assistance to the poor? Medicaid? emergency Utility assistance? What ?

Or maybe you think we can just tax "the rich" some more and take care of it?

    lol

This state has had it's guts ripped out. Michigan was hit perhaps harder than any other state by the Slow death of US manufacturing. A big part of the cause of that death, is Union Contracts making competing in a global Market difficult, and Government Regulations.

For the last 12 Years we had a Democrat Governor, who raised taxes, especially on Business and "the Rich" The Result was the loss of 25% of the Businesses that were here Before she took office. She gave us the Second Highest Business taxes in the Nation, Her Admin Gave the Public Sector Unions sweet heart Deals, and now this state is in A deep hole.

He doesn't care he's downing in his own stupidity. Governor Synder has only been in office since January before that he was not in poilitics.
