Before Michael Steele was defending entitlements...
The first line in the RNC's "Health Care Bill of Rights for Seniors" released today is a fierce defense of Medicare spending:
* PROTECT MEDICARE AND NOT CUT IT IN THE NAME OF HEALTH CARE REFORM: President Obama and Congressional Democrats are promoting a government-run health care experiment that will cut over $500 billion from Medicare to be used to pay for their plan. Medicare should not be raided to pay for another entitlement.
Blanket opposition to entitlement changes is, as the Democrats have proven, good politics, but it isn't exactly the hallmark of the Republican Party, and a Democrat notes that it hasn't been RNC Chairman Michael Steele's position either. A Democrat notes that in a 2006 Maryland Senate debate, Steele expressly advocated for Medicare cuts. <more>
