Miami Beach declares a state of emergency after recent spring break violence

The City of Miami Beach has declared a state of emergency in addition to implementing an upcoming curfew in order to curb violence across the city this spring break.

The move from officials comes after shootings this past weekend wounded five people.

During a news conference Monday with the Miami Beach Police Department and other city officials, Mayor Dan Gelber said that tourists had created an "unacceptable" atmosphere across the city, and that the city was "way past its endpoint."

The mayor emphasized that he, along with city officials, don't ask for spring break to come to Miami Beach, but simply endure it.

"It's simply unacceptable at every level," Gelber said. "We simply cannot endure this anymore."

I remember when the biggest threats from Spring Break were alcohol poisoning and syphilis.

The thing that so many seem unable or unwilling to grasp is that lawlessness is not limited by "righteous" intentions. It's a cancer on everyone and it only gets worse as time goes by. The Chicago style of madness will eventually metastasize to all major urban areas. Plan accordingly.

They can always do what Palm Springs did when Spring Break got to be too big a disruption. Stop being an attraction. Start enforcing the laws and the students will go elsewhere. The downside of that is when the students get to be adults, they don't have good memories of where they went and go elsewhere as tourists. Plam Springs tourism has fallen off dramatically since becoming hostile to spring breakers.
