Lindsey Grahm wants National ID

Yes, need I remind you of the Patriot Act? NSA Wiretapping? Minor intrusions upon our liberties like that.

Immie
Agreed. But, let's be factual. NSA wiretapping was under Carter.
By the authority vested in me as President by Sections 102 and
104 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 (50 U.S.C.
1802 and 1804), in order to provide as set forth in that Act (this
chapter) for the authorization of electronic surveillance for
foreign intelligence purposes, it is hereby ordered as follows:

1-101. Pursuant to Section 102(a)(1) of the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Act of 1978 (50 U.S.C. 1802(a)), the Attorney General
is authorized to approve electronic surveillance to acquire foreign
intelligence information without a court order, but only if the
Attorney General makes the certifications required by that Section.

1-102. Pursuant to Section 102(b) of the Foreign Intelligence Act
of 1978 (50 U.S.C. 1802(b)), the Attorney General is authorized to
approve applications to the court having jurisdiction under Section
103 of that Act (50 U.S.C. 1803) to obtain orders for electronic
surveillance for the purpose of obtaining foreign intelligence
information.

1-103. Pursuant to Section 104(a)(7) of the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Act of 1978 (50 U.S.C. 1804(a)(7)), the following
officials, each of whom is employed in the area of national
security or defense, is designated to make the certifications
required by Section 104(a)(7) of the Act in support of applications
to conduct electronic surveillance:

(a) Secretary of State.

(b) Secretary of Defense.

(c) Director of Central Intelligence.

(d) Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

(e) Deputy Secretary of State.

(f) Deputy Secretary of Defense.

(g) Deputy Director of Central Intelligence.

None of the above officials, nor anyone officially acting in that
capacity, may exercise the authority to make the above
certifications, unless that official has been appointed by the
President with the advice and consent of the Senate.

1-104. Section 2-202 of Executive Order No. 12036 (set out under
section 401 of this title) is amended by inserting the following at
the end of that section: ''Any electronic surveillance, as defined
in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978, shall be
conducted in accordance with that Act as well as this Order.''.

1-105. Section 2-203 of Executive Order No. 12036 (set out under
section 401 of this title) is amended by inserting the following at
the end of that section: ''Any monitoring which constitutes
electronic surveillance as defined in the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Act of 1978 shall be conducted in accordance with that
Act as well as this Order.''.

Jimmy Carter.

[Executive Order 12139]

Obama still keeps the Patriot Act.

the Attorney General
is authorized to approve electronic surveillance to acquire foreign
intelligence information without a court order,

the Attorney General is authorized to
approve applications to the court having jurisdiction under Section
103 of that Act (50 U.S.C. 1803) to obtain orders for electronic
surveillance for the purpose of obtaining foreign intelligence
information.

You're reading something into this that just isn't there. Law enforcement can wire tap now, but they need to give the court a "reason" and it better be a good reason. This is nothing like the Patriot Act, but good try.
And you're reading something that I never said. I never said the wiretapping started under Carter was the Patriot Act. What are you going on about?

Obama: "Here's my Patriot Act, I think I'll keep it."

This isn't something new, republicans want to control people just as much as the next guy.
For they want to tell a women what they can do with their body, and want to tell you who you can marry because THEIR religion says it is wrong.
We also have Michelle McCarthy calling for "witch hunts", and Ann Coulter saying women shouldn't vote. The GOP of today has no plans to stay out of your life, and you are a fool if you think they do.

This tendency actually comes from the progressives because Grahm teamed up with another democrat for this. I'm guessing that immigration was used as a lure to get this ID card idea threw. I'm guessing that the original idea came from a democrat.

Then why bother even bringing it...Ok, nevermind.

I didn't bring up wiretapping or the Patriot Act. I responded to it.

Idiot.

Most of the rest of the world has a national identity card. It's called a cedula juritica in Latin countries.
I suppose them thar Texicans don't want anyone to know they're from Murkastan.

The problem with that argument is that the rest of the world is already screwed up and my person doesn't need identification. Its not up to me to prove that I am who I say I am to the government. When the government thinks I did something and needs to prove who I am then it brings the evidence about my identity. I should not have to alter my life because to make it easier for them to find out who I am. My friends know who I am, my family knows who I am, and that is all that is important and all that is needed for me to funtion.

The thing that makes me suspicious re a national ID card is that the government has all the tools it needs right now to identify illegals and, for the most part, it is doing little or nothing to use them. So I don't think a national ID card is going to make much difference re illegal immigration. It will, however, be a means by which the government, should it choose to do so, exercise more control over the citizens of the country. And I think our Founders would be quite suspicious about that.

Nothing wrong with reiterating what they did with that power when they had it before.

The white wing likes to go on about how they never had the majorities like the Democrats enjoy. Of course, they had two methods that rendered that unimportant.

First, they said Democrats were unpatriotic (with us or with the terrorists - particularly effective when we are at war)

Second, they used reconciliation. They only have a problem when Democrats use it.

I'm not seeing the black/white differences between the two flavors of DC crooks. If its not freezers full of cash, its backroom deals, billions to ACORN the voter fraud experts, stupid policies like C+T and healthcare we can't pay for.

If you thought that the GOP used reconciliation before, just wait until 2010 and 2012. Filibuster is "dead". 51 Senate votes is the new normal.

Billions to ACORN? How many billions?:

Healthcare we can't pay for? Actually, what we can't pay for are American citizens using the "emergency room" as their "primary" source of health care at more than 10 times the cost.

Why do you guys persist is speaking such nonsense?

The best possible solution would have been the "single payer" system, but the Republicans scared the shit out of the American people. The nerve. They did the same over Iraq. And it's how they got support for their trillion dollar gift to the drug companies. They do Bin Laden's work for him.

1. $$4billions to ACORN and their ilk ACORN and other leftist groups eligible to get nearly $4 billion in Obama's fiscal 2011 budget - Water Cooler - Washington Times

2. So throw the "gomers" out and/or charge their country of origin for their medical costs. Medicare generally gets the bill either way, so WTF is the difference? I'd rather pay for an occasional ER visit than for every cough and sneeze of 31,000,000 more looking for free medical care.

3. Nonsense? Obama's healthcare abortion is nonsense. For a Law Perfessor he doesn't seem to get the Constitution thing. Watch as the States repeal der perfessor's healthcare mess.

4. $Trillion gift to the drug companies? The drug benefit was a democrat idea, and it was passed with bi-partisan support. So don't try to blame Bush and the GOP for an entitlement that was supported by both parties.
Democrats Say G.O.P. Endangers Medicare Drug Accord - NYTimes.com

5. BTW, isn't it justice that Obama now has to deal with the financial crisis that he and a few other key democrats (Dodd, Frank, etc.) created by supporting giving mortgages to the unqualified. When they defaulted the financial system broke and now Obama ended up with what he created. I hope all the cash they got from Fannie & Freddie was worth it. (not really)

Back to the main topic. I fully support a national ID system. Especially if it requires bio-metric proof of ID to fly, such as face-print, finger-print, voice-print, and even an iris-scan.

I am so thrilled that Dude and his buds are going to get to experience fully the way things are going to be over the next several decades.

Lucky people.

That's why the Republican Party has lost so many supporters and lost Congress and the Presidency. However, people who vote for Democrats seem to tolerate intrusive government as long as they get their government hand-outs. :cuckoo:

I didn't see too many so-called conservatives and Republicans in the midwest complaining about all of the farm subsidies they were receiving from the Bush administration.

If they don't, they're not really conservatives, are they.

Yeah, I think they are. Conservatism is not small government and there is no such proof that it is. All of these southern Senators and Congressmen down here with the exception of Jim DeMint are the biggest pork barrel earmarkers in the Congress. Thad Cochran, Henry Brown, Roger Wicker, Richard Shelby, those guys can't enough of our money to funnel back to their states. When did John Thune and Chuck Grassley speak out against farm subsidies? Are you trying to tell me Mike Huckabee isn't a conservative?

If these guys aren't conservatives you better tell that to the American Conservative Union because they've all got around 90% conservative ratings from them.

Conservatism means small government unless big government happens to benefit me.

All Socialists/Progressives should be voted out of office as soon as possible. This goes for both parties. Lindsey Graham is just another Neocon/Progressive disguising himself as a Conservative. Unfortunately his ilk have taken control of the Republican Party. The Republicans can not move forward until they get rid of these types of frauds first. Make 2010 count people.

You know what though?

It doesn't really matter whether or not we do vote them out of office because the only people who have a chance of winning an election are people presented to us by one party or the other and if you vote Graham out of office he will be replaced by either a progressive Democrat or a progressive Republican. That is all either party is offering these days.

So replace Graham and you get... Graham.
