Two Americans Killed at Training Center in Jordan, Official Says
Nov 09, 2015 -- A Jordanian policeman opened fire Monday on foreign trainers at a police compound, killing two Americans and a South African before being shot dead, the government spokesman said.
The shooter also wounded two Americans and four Jordanians, one of them critically, said the spokesman, Mohammed Momani. The motive was not immediately clear. Momani described the shooter as an "attacker" and said he committed a "crime," but did not say whether authorities considered the fatal shooting a terror attack.

Special operations forces from Iraq, Jordan and the U.S. conduct an exercise as part of military maneuvers at the King Abdullah Special Operations Training Center (KASOTC) in Amman, Jordan

The shooting, at a police training camp on the outskirts of the Jordanian capital, raises questions about Jordan's image as an island of relative stability in a turbulent region. Over the past year, the pro-Western kingdom has taken on a high-profile role in the fight against extremists, including the Islamic State group, which controls large areas of neighboring Iraq and Syria. There has been concern that militants could carry out revenge attacks on Jordanian soil.

In a statement released by Jordan's state news agency, Petra, Momani said an investigation has been launched into "the reasons behind the crime." In Washington, there was no immediate response from the Pentagon. The U.S. Embassy in Jordan said that it is in touch with Jordanian authorities, "who have offered their full support." U.S. forces in Afghanistan have come under attack on a number of occasions by local police and troops serving alongside them, in what are known as green-on-blue assaults. Such attacks have been extremely rare in the Middle East.

Army to Deploy 101st Airborne Soldiers to Oversee Iraqi Army Training
Nov 06, 2015 | The U.S. Army is sending 500 soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) to Iraq and Kuwait in early 2016 to advise and assist Iraqi Security Forces.
The 101st headquarters element will assume the role of Combined Joint Forces Land Component Command-Iraq, replacing the 82nd Airborne Division headquarters, according to a Nov. 6 Army press release. During the nine-month deployment, the division headquarters will provide command and control of coalition troops that are training, advising, and assisting Iraqi forces as part of Operation Inherent Resolve to combat militants affiliated with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS.

Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment (Red Currahee), 101st Airborne Division, lay down suppressive fire Oct. 5, 2015, during a ground assault training exercise in New Mexico.

About 1,300 paratroopers from 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 82nd Airborne Division recently returned from a nine-month mission of training Iraqi army units as part of the advise-and-assist mission. During that deployment, the 3rd BCT formed in teams and helped to train about 12,400 new Iraqi army soldiers. The teams also worked every day with Iraqi Ground Forces Command. Iraqi army units are currently fighting in the counterattack to retake Ramadi from militant fighters of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

The 101st HQ began preparing for the 2016 deployment in late summer. "Operation Inherent Resolve has been the focus of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Headquarters for the last three months," said 101st commander Maj. Gen. Gary J. Volesky. "Going back to 1942, Screaming Eagle soldiers have always answered our nation's call to duty with pride and tenacity," said Volesky. "This tough mission is our next 'Rendezvous with Destiny' - and we are ready for it."
