The Des Moines Register has a new story and poll out :

There’s been a shakeup, however, in the rest of the field.

Thompson, a former Tennessee senator who officially entered the race for the Republican nomination a month ago, grabs second place in the new poll at 18 percent. The poll was conducted while he was finishing his second campaign trip to Iowa last week.

Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor who demonstrated surprising strength in the Iowa Republican Party’s straw poll in August, has moved up in the pack by claiming the support of 12 percent of likely caucus participants.

“He’s a driven man of principle. He’s very personable. He’ll look you right in the eye when he talks to you,” said Greg Lascheid, a 46-year-old Alden resident who met Huckabee at a campaign stop in Ames last summer.

Support for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Arizona Sen. John McCain has eroded.

Giuliani, at 11 percent, is in a virtual tie with Huckabee for third place. But his level of support was 6 points higher in the Register’s last presidential poll in May. McCain and Giuliani ran neck-and-neck then as the nearest challengers to Romney. Thompson wasn’t included in the May poll because he hadn’t declared his candidacy.

McCain, who has had to retool his national campaign, has dropped to fifth place in the latest Iowa Poll, at 7 percent
