LaHood: We’re looking into technology to disable cell phones in vehicles

Disabling cell phones in cars = Bad idea.

Pulling over erratic drivers who are talking on their cell phones and giving them a ticket similar to a DUI = Good idea.

You want people who use their cells whilst driving to get criminal records and do jail time?

Not a bad alternative.....

So then you're OK with driving under the influence? OK, noted.

You don't do a blanket disabling of cell phones, just like you don't do a blanket banning of alcohol consumption. You go after the problem drivers, not everybody.

The reason talking and/or texting while driving is worse than other distractions is because of how our brain works and processes information. Even hands-free phones don't solve the problem because the problem isn't the holding of a phone.

How the Brain Works: Driving, Cell Phones and Cognitive Abilities | ITworld

I'd have no problem if states decided to ban cell phone usage while driving. Stiff fines similar to dui fines for those who break the law too.

Technology that disables the phone when you turn your car on? Pros and cons to it.

It's a shame people are too stupid to see how dangerous it is. Like Fitz, I see it all the time and have avoided being hit by an unaware cell phone driver many times.

Why don't we just ban Cell Phones and Cars all together? Problem would certainly be solved then no? And while we're at it why don't we ban Swimming Pools too? We all know how many people die from drowning in them each year right? Unfortunately this nation has allowed the Goose Steppers to take control of our Government. It's a "Throw the baby out with the bathwater mentality."

A couple of stupid college kids die from drinking too many Energy Drinks that contain alcohol and the Government immediately bans these Energy Drinks for everyone? So all American Adults have to suffer because of a couple of stupid college kids? People really do need to wake up and start getting involved. "Throwing the baby out with the bathwater" is no way for a Government to work. We are adults for God's sake. We have rights. Time to stand up for them.

Stupid people who drown because they can't swim don't affect me. Stupid college kids who drink alcoholic energy drinks don't affect me. No need for ban.

Stupid drivers on cell phones in cars do affect me, and you, when they're out there on the road driving under the influence of their stupidity. States should make the call on whether to ban or not, not the Fed, imo.

Banning cell phones or banning cars altogether is ridiculous. But you knew that.

"Stupid college kids who drink alcoholic energy drinks don't affect me. No need for ban." Well they have now banned them for everyone. They already fine Citizens for using Cell Phones in their cars. There is no need for "Cell Phone Scramblers." That's just as ridiculous as banning Energy Drinks that contain alcohol because some stupid college kids drank too many. One day you'll wake up and realize this. I'm confident of that.

I see the gov. creating a situation to get you killed. The world is full of crime, yet those charged with preventing and protecting you are never around when you need them. In fact 911 just provides a recording of you getting offed by some criminal. I guess someone likes those tapes. When you are in your car you are in the criminals world, out there away from the secured home, and having a cell phone inside your car is essential to that protection, your life line to any major help that maybe available. To help you out, this device requires the motor be shut off, which means you have to be stopped while the criminal is shooting you, or breaking out your windows to subdue you. You might be anywhere when this occurs, a dark freeway, middle of town, etc.

Further, you are cut off from family and friends if they are calling you in an emergency of their own, and need your help. So this phone idea really sucks, and I am speaking as someone who was rammed in the ass end in traffic, by a women talking on her cell phone, and destroyed my car. This is just the wrong approach. How about the police doing their job, or making a radar type device they can aim at a car and see if a cell phone is active.

.........................

I think every American Citizen should be required to be publicly groped by the TSA before being allowed to enter their vehicles. Problems solved no? Be very careful with all that Goose Stepping. You're giving them a Green Light to do almost anything when you do that.

Would this law retroact for time travellers that go back in time to...say...1928?

using a cell phone while driving is reckless endangerment.

Would you rather it be treated exactly like a DUI?

I would rather cops pull people over for reckless driving if their cell phone conversation is causing them to drive recklessly. Boy, what an idea.

Tell me something, genius. If they disable cell phone use in everyone's vehicle and you go sliding off the road night, smash into a tree, and are trapped in your car, how are you going to call anyone for help?

use your onboard onstar. toss a distress beacon from your car. honk your horn.

What did people do before they had cell phones? Do you think that the cell phone is a right now?

I think it would be great if all public spaces disabled them! Restaurants, theaters, buses, airplanes etc.

I hope they pass this law, and then my mother is driving in her car and a lunatic stalker is following her with the intent to kill her if he can get the chance, and she can't make a phone call to the police to report the activity because her cell phone is being scrambled for her safety.

And the FCC is working to get the ability to shut down domains if they find somebody infringing copywrited material.

Big Brother is Touching All Your Junk.

Bingo! The Socialists/Progressives are on the march. Beware, they might be coming for you next.

With two out of five commissioners being Republicans, I think the threat is lessened.

The FCC is directed by five Commissioners appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate for 5-year terms.

Commissioner Michael J. Copps (D)
Joined the FCC on May 31, 2001 and was sworn in for his second term in December 2005.

Copps served until January 2001 as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Trade Development at the U.S. Department of Commerce, where he was previously Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Basic Industries. Copps came to Washington in 1970, joining the staff of Senator Ernest Hollings (D-SC) and serving for over a dozen years as Chief of Staff. He has also held positions at a Fortune 500 company and at a major trade association. Before coming to Washington, Copps was a professor of U.S. History at Loyola University of the South. Copps received a B.A. from Wofford College and earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Chairman Julius Genachowski (D)
Julius Genachowski was nominated by President Barack Obama to a seat on the Federal Communications Commission on March 23, 2009. He was unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate on June 25, 2009, and sworn in as FCC Commissioner on June 29, 2009.

===
Commissioner Robert M. McDowell (R)
Robert M. McDowell was first appointed to a seat on the Federal Communications Commission by President George W. Bush and unanimously confirmed by the Senate in 2006. When he was reappointed to the Commission on June 2, 2009, Commissioner McDowell became the first Republican to be appointed to an independent agency by President Barack Obama. He was unanimously confirmed by the Senate on June 25, 2009.

===
Commissioner Mignon Clyburn (D)
Mignon Clyburn was nominated for a seat on the Federal Communications Commission by President Barack Obama on June 25, 2009. She was unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate on July 24, 2009, and sworn-in as Commissioner on August 3, 2009.

Oooh my! And they should ban smoking in cars as well, and make the cigarette lighter work only when the motor is shut off. Also a breath analyzer for the driver in his tobacco induced euphoric state buzzing down the freeway around your families car, not to mention litter and Smokey the Bear fires.

Wow, they just won't quit, will they. The older I get the less I recognize this nation. More justification of a police state to keep us "safe." Are the American people going to stand back and let this happen?

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said using a cell phone while driving is so dangerous that devices may soon be installed in cars to forcibly stop drivers — and potentially anyone else in the vehicle — from using them.

“There’s a lot of technology out there now that can disable phones and we’re looking at that,” said LaHood on MSNBC. LaHood said the cellphone scramblers were one way, and also stressed the importance of “personal responsibility.”

The hosts of Morning Joe pushed the secretary about the possibility of requiring scrambling technology installed in vehicles.

“I think it will be done,” said LaHood. “I think the technology is there and I think you’re going to see the technology become adaptable in automobiles to disable these cell phones. We need to do a lot more if were going to save lives.”

Smart phones etc,car stereo systems with volume over 45% playing ACDC through a school zone, being played after 10 PM in a residential area....well not any more kiddies....

No more smoking in buildings,no more smoking outside of buildings,no more smoking in your own apartment. Can't smoke in restaurants, bars, sporting events.

No more fried foods fried in a certain oil,no more pizza for the kiddies in school lunch halls.
No more salt added in foods....Calories listed on menus.....

On and on and on.....more and more of our choices albeit bad ones left to the populace to decide on have been taken away or probably will be.

Is anyone having any kind of problem with this??????

How bout if they put all that back and just get rid of the moronic cell phone drivers? :D

She could drive to police station. Or a well populated shopping area. Just sayin'.

Yea it's a Goose Stepper World now unfortunately. It's always "For your own Good." So many Goose Steppers who are actually proud of it. Very sad & frightening. :(

Dear Libo,

Please come up with an alternative word for 'goose stepper'. Oh, and 'goose steeper' doesn't cut it. Kthxbai.

Signed,

I have been in two near misses because the other driver was on the cell phone.
My parents were rear ended (minor) by someone who witnesses saw in an animated argument while on the cell phone.
Last year 3 teenagers were killed on Ind. St Rd 37 northbound when they ran a red light and a delivery straight truck plowed into them at full speed - the driver was texting back and forth with a girlfriend.

I could go on - as many here can.
I was against the seat belt law that passed here in Indiana because only the person themselves life was in danger, no one else.
THIS IS DIFFERENT.
When you are on a cell phone you are not only placing your life in danger, but endangering everyone who may come in contact with you.

Umm because it is true?
Naah could not be that simple,

Color me skeptical. Traffic fatalities are going down, and have been for years. Cell phones have been becoming more common over that same period of time. The only way those studies could be true is if other factors that contribute to accidents suddenly decreased significantly. The numbers do not add up.

Car Accident Cell Phone Statistics

Data regarding car accidents involving cell phone use and/or texting while driving has been limited in the past, but it's slowly becoming available to the public. The information on this page reflects the most current 2007 and 2008 statistics regarding cell phone usage and text messaging during car accidents.

While the popularity of mobile phones has grown enormously in the past two decades, it's still unclear how greatly cell phone calls and texting contribute to car crashes. What is clear is that talking on the phone and texting behind the wheel both lead to distraction, and driver inattention is the leading cause of car accidents.

Cell phone accidents due to distraction while talking, walking and especially driving are increasing.

There’s increasing evidence that walking while using your phone to talk, text, tweet and surf is dangerous.

Theres plenty of other sites you can peruse. The facts are the facts.

Like the fact that automobile deaths are going down? Or does tha t particular fact not fit in your world?

It really is a Goose Stepper World at this point. People really do fear the Terrorists and their own Government. Therefore they play it safe and Goose Step for anything the Government does. It's all out of fear in the end. More people fear their Government now than ever before. That's not how it's supposed to be. Our Founding Fathers did not want this. It's just very depressing.

The only Law's I know of that ban Speaker Phones generally relate to Construction Work Zones. Other than that Cell Phone usage is within the Law while driving. You all are control freaks. The Phone Nazi Party Reborn. Why not just ban Texting totally while you are at it, and free speech. Sounds like something Ravi would do. WWRD, figure it out, and just do the opposite. ;)
