New Jersey needs to make sure it is keeping close tabs on every sex offender who has been released from prison. Legislation scheduled to be considered today by the State Senate Law and Public Safety Committee is designed to make sure that's the case. The measure is sponsored by Senator Fred Madden who also just happens to be the former acting State Police Superintendent.

Specifically, Madden's bill requires the State Attorney General, on or before March 30th of each year, to conduct a review of all persons who were released from prison or involuntary commitment in the previous calendar year and who are required to register as a sex offender. The review is to determine whether such persons actually did register and whether they were tiered by the county prosecutors.

"What we're saying with this bill, I believe to the people and to the offenders is simply this; although Megan's Law was passed a number of years ago we're continuing to be diligent," explains Madden. "This bill will, when it passes guarantee another system of checks and balances in our current review process that will ensure the proper monitoring of all sex offenders."

Those caught not registering as required by law would be subject to penalties imposed by existing law which could include additional time behind bars..

This is the kind of crap that annoys the shit out of me. All of this is already in Megan's Law. But because the a=holes have failed to MONITOR and ENFORCE it, they need another frickin law. Will we need another law to make sure this one is enforced?

Politicians fearmongering and exploiting abused children to justify their own importance. Infuriating.
