Getting back to the original allegations it seems that the Israeli forces were outnumbered and out gunned during the six day war but they managed to defeat an invasion force. For some reason LBJ decided to immerse a "intelligence" ship armed only with 50 cal machine guns into the mayhem and it was attacked by Israeli forces. Obviously there was no intent by Israel to attack it's greatest ally in history. so the Liberty must have been a casualty of the fog of war.
