In the Book of Revelation, in chapter 5, a book is introduced which is sealed on the back with seven seals. Nobody was able open the book except the Lamb of God. In chapter 6, when He opens the book, he opens each seal. When he opens the first 4 seals, he sees what is now known as the four horsemen of the apocalypse. The first 5 seals are covered in the first 11 verses. The sixth seal is covered in the next 6 verses of the chapter and also in chapter 7. Chapter 8 is where he opens the 7th seal. But what does this book and the seals represent? Joseph Smith received a revelation from God teaching what much of these things mean. The link to the revelation is Doctrine and Covenants 77.

In the following verses Joseph Smith is taught about the book that was sealed with seven seals:

Doctrine and Covenants 77:6-7
6 Q. What are we to understand by the book which John saw, which was sealed on the back with seven seals? A. We are to understand that it contains the revealed will, mysteries, and the works of God; the hidden things of his economy concerning this earth during the seven thousand years of its continuance, or its temporal existence.

7 Q. What are we to understand by the seven seals with which it was sealed?
A. We are to understand that the first seal contains the things of the first thousand years, and the second also of the second thousand years, and so on until the seventh.

So according to the revelation given to Joseph Smith, the book represents a seven thousand year period of the earth's temporal existence. It contains the revealed will, mysteries, and works of God; the hidden things of his economy concerning this earth during those seven thousand years.

The temporal existence of this earth began at the fall of Adam, and will end at the end of the millennial reign of Christ. At that time there will be a new heaven and a new earth as stated in Revelation 21:1.

The revelation then explains that seven seals of the book represent each of the seven thousand years of the earth's temporal existence. So the first seal would represent the first thousand years, the second seal would represent the second thousand years, and so on until the seventh seal.

Since the Book of Revelation is a revelation concerning things to come, not much time is given to past seals, ie seals 1-4. Seal 5 occurs during the era of the ministry of the 12 Apostles and for some time thereafter. Seal 6 is given more consideration throughout the Book of Revelation. Seal 7 is given even more attention since it concerns the era when Christ will return to this earth. In some following posts, I will try to give some interpretation of these seals as presented in the Book of Revelation.

someone lied to you.

The seven seals in the revelation of John were place on the scroll preventing everyone from seeing whats written inside. This represents the seven miracles, or signs, in the gospel of John which prevents people from grasping the hidden teaching of the stories..

Some people read it and claim to believe, some people read it laugh and then wear it like an ornamental bone in their nose. Meanwhile the teaching remains above their collective grasp.

The breaking of the seven seals is the deciphering of the seven miracles by the lamb revealing the hidden teaching wisdom and mystery of God.

Lets take a look at the opening of the first seal. According to the revelation given to Joseph Smith, this would represent the first 1000 year period of the earth's temporal existence starting when Adam fell and was cast out of the Garden of Eden.

Revelation 6:1-2
1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.
2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

John is shown here what is representative of the first thousand years. He sees a white horse and a man sitting on the horse with a bow and a crown upon his head. The man on the white horse goes forth conquering and to conquer.

White is a symbol of purity. The white horse and the man who sits upon him represent the righteousness of God going forth in the beginning of the world to establish righteousness. Adam spread the gospel to his children and they in turn taught their children. Adam lived to be 930 years old. So he lived through most of the time represented by the first seal. Although there were those who did follow after wickedness in those days, many were righteous and great things occurred during the first thousand years. During this era, the prophet Enoch preached unto the people and set up the city of Zion. The people of Zion were so righteous that God took the entire city of Zion up into heaven. Many of the righteous that followed those days were also caught up into the city of Zion.

Genesis 5:18-24
18 And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch:
19 And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:
20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died.
21 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah:
22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:
23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:
24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

A vision given to Enoch the prophet. He sees his city taken into heaven and then sees the future of the earth:
Moses 7:23-69
23 And after that Zion was taken up into heaven, Enoch beheld, and lo, all the nations of the earth were before him;
24 And there came generation upon generation; and Enoch was high and lifted up, even in the bosom of the Father, and of the Son of Man; and behold, the power of Satan was upon all the face of the earth.
25 And he saw angels descending out of heaven; and he heard a loud voice saying: Wo, wo be unto the inhabitants of the earth.
26 And he beheld Satan; and he had a great chain in his hand, and it veiled the whole face of the earth with darkness; and he looked up and laughed, and his angels rejoiced.
27 And Enoch beheld angels descending out of heaven, bearing testimony of the Father and Son; and the Holy Ghost fell on many, and they were caught up by the powers of heaven into Zion.
28 And it came to pass that the God of heaven looked upon the residue of the people, and he wept; and Enoch bore record of it, saying: How is it that the heavens weep, and shed forth their tears as the rain upon the mountains?
29 And Enoch said unto the Lord: How is it that thou canst weep, seeing thou art holy, and from all eternity to all eternity?
30 And were it possible that man could number the particles of the earth, yea, millions of earths like this, it would not be a beginning to the number of thy creations; and thy curtains are stretched out still; and yet thou art there, and thy bosom is there; and also thou art just; thou art merciful and kind forever;
31 And thou hast taken Zion to thine own bosom, from all thy creations, from all eternity to all eternity; and naught but peace, justice, and truth is the habitation of thy throne; and mercy shall go before thy face and have no end; how is it thou canst weep?
32 The Lord said unto Enoch: Behold these thy brethren; they are the workmanship of mine own hands, and I gave unto them their knowledge, in the day I created them; and in the Garden of Eden, gave I unto man his agency;
33 And unto thy brethren have I said, and also given commandment, that they should love one another, and that they should choose me, their Father; but behold, they are without affection, and they hate their own blood;
34 And the fire of mine indignation is kindled against them; and in my hot displeasure will I send in the floods upon them, for my fierce anger is kindled against them.
35 Behold, I am God; Man of Holiness is my name; Man of Counsel is my name; and Endless and Eternal is my name, also.
36 Wherefore, I can stretch forth mine hands and hold all the creations which I have made; and mine eye can pierce them also, and among all the workmanship of mine hands there has not been so great wickedness as among thy brethren.
37 But behold, their sins shall be upon the heads of their fathers; Satan shall be their father, and misery shall be their doom; and the whole heavens shall weep over them, even all the workmanship of mine hands; wherefore should not the heavens weep, seeing these shall suffer?
38 But behold, these which thine eyes are upon shall perish in the floods; and behold, I will shut them up; a prison have I prepared for them.
39 And that which I have chosen hath pled before my face. Wherefore, he suffereth for their sins; inasmuch as they will repent in the day that my Chosen shall return unto me, and until that day they shall be in torment;
40 Wherefore, for this shall the heavens weep, yea, and all the workmanship of mine hands.
41 And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto Enoch, and told Enoch all the doings of the children of men; wherefore Enoch knew, and looked upon their wickedness, and their misery, and wept and stretched forth his arms, and his heart swelled wide as eternity; and his bowels yearned; and all eternity shook.
42 And Enoch also saw Noah, and his family; that the posterity of all the sons of Noah should be saved with a temporal salvation;
43 Wherefore Enoch saw that Noah built an ark; and that the Lord smiled upon it, and held it in his own hand; but upon the residue of the wicked the floods came and swallowed them up.
44 And as Enoch saw this, he had bitterness of soul, and wept over his brethren, and said unto the heavens: I will refuse to be comforted; but the Lord said unto Enoch: Lift up your heart, and be glad; and look.
45 And it came to pass that Enoch looked; and from Noah, he beheld all the families of the earth; and he cried unto the Lord, saying: When shall the day of the Lord come? When shall the blood of the Righteous be shed, that all they that mourn may be sanctified and have eternal life?
46 And the Lord said: It shall be in the meridian of time, in the days of wickedness and vengeance.
47 And behold, Enoch saw the day of the coming of the Son of Man, even in the flesh; and his soul rejoiced, saying: The Righteous is lifted up, and the Lamb is slain from the foundation of the world; and through faith I am in the bosom of the Father, and behold, Zion is with me.
48 And it came to pass that Enoch looked upon the earth; and he heard a voice from the bowels thereof, saying: Wo, wo is me, the mother of men; I am pained, I am weary, because of the wickedness of my children. When shall I rest, and be cleansed from the filthiness which is gone forth out of me? When will my Creator sanctify me, that I may rest, and righteousness for a season abide upon my face?
49 And when Enoch heard the earth mourn, he wept, and cried unto the Lord, saying: O Lord, wilt thou not have compassion upon the earth? Wilt thou not bless the children of Noah?
50 And it came to pass that Enoch continued his cry unto the Lord, saying: I ask thee, O Lord, in the name of thine Only Begotten, even Jesus Christ, that thou wilt have mercy upon Noah and his seed, that the earth might never more be covered by the floods.
51 And the Lord could not withhold; and he covenanted with Enoch, and sware unto him with an oath, that he would stay the floods; that he would call upon the children of Noah;
52 And he sent forth an unalterable decree, that a remnant of his seed should always be found among all nations, while the earth should stand;
53 And the Lord said: Blessed is he through whose seed Messiah shall come; for he saith—I am Messiah, the King of Zion, the Rock of Heaven, which is broad as eternity; whoso cometh in at the gate and climbeth up by me shall never fall; wherefore, blessed are they of whom I have spoken, for they shall come forth with songs of everlasting joy.
54 And it came to pass that Enoch cried unto the Lord, saying: When the Son of Man cometh in the flesh, shall the earth rest? I pray thee, show me these things.
55 And the Lord said unto Enoch: Look, and he looked and beheld the Son of Man lifted up on the cross, after the manner of men;
56 And he heard a loud voice; and the heavens were veiled; and all the creations of God mourned; and the earth groaned; and the rocks were rent; and the saints arose, and were crowned at the right hand of the Son of Man, with crowns of glory;
57 And as many of the spirits as were in prison came forth, and stood on the right hand of God; and the remainder were reserved in chains of darkness until the judgment of the great day.
58 And again Enoch wept and cried unto the Lord, saying: When shall the earth rest?
59 And Enoch beheld the Son of Man ascend up unto the Father; and he called unto the Lord, saying: Wilt thou not come again upon the earth? Forasmuch as thou art God, and I know thee, and thou hast sworn unto me, and commanded me that I should ask in the name of thine Only Begotten; thou hast made me, and given unto me a right to thy throne, and not of myself, but through thine own grace; wherefore, I ask thee if thou wilt not come again on the earth.
60 And the Lord said unto Enoch: As I live, even so will I come in the last days, in the days of wickedness and vengeance, to fulfil the oath which I have made unto you concerning the children of Noah;
61 And the day shall come that the earth shall rest, but before that day the heavens shall be darkened, and a veil of darkness shall cover the earth; and the heavens shall shake, and also the earth; and great tribulations shall be among the children of men, but my people will I preserve;
62 And righteousness will I send down out of heaven; and truth will I send forth out of the earth, to bear testimony of mine Only Begotten; his resurrection from the dead; yea, and also the resurrection of all men; and righteousness and truth will I cause to sweep the earth as with a flood, to gather out mine elect from the four quarters of the earth, unto a place which I shall prepare, an Holy City, that my people may gird up their loins, and be looking forth for the time of my coming; for there shall be my tabernacle, and it shall be called Zion, a New Jerusalem.
63 And the Lord said unto Enoch: Then shalt thou and all thy city meet them there, and we will receive them into our bosom, and they shall see us; and we will fall upon their necks, and they shall fall upon our necks, and we will kiss each other;
64 And there shall be mine abode, and it shall be Zion, which shall come forth out of all the creations which I have made; and for the space of a thousand years the earth shall rest.
65 And it came to pass that Enoch saw the day of the coming of the Son of Man, in the last days, to dwell on the earth in righteousness for the space of a thousand years;
66 But before that day he saw great tribulations among the wicked; and he also saw the sea, that it was troubled, and men’s hearts failing them, looking forth with fear for the judgments of the Almighty God, which should come upon the wicked.
67 And the Lord showed Enoch all things, even unto the end of the world; and he saw the day of the righteous, the hour of their redemption, and received a fulness of joy;
68 And all the days of Zion, in the days of Enoch, were three hundred and sixty-five years.
69 And Enoch and all his people walked with God, and he dwelt in the midst of Zion; and it came to pass that Zion was not, for God received it up into his own bosom; and from thence went forth the saying, Zion is Fled.

Although much righteousness was accomplished in the days of Adam and Enoch, wickedness still was in the hearts of many on the face of the earth and it was to only get worse in the days to come. Thus the white horse and its rider was the purity of the saints who were of such a righteous character that they were taken into heaven as the city of Zion. But they were to return again in the last days to be with the latter-day saints in the new Zion or New Jerusalem to await the second coming of our Lord and Savior on the earth.

When the Lord had opened the second seal which represented the next 1000 year period or the 2nd thousand year period of the earth's temporal existence, we read:

Revelation 6:3-4
3 And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.
4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

The second thousand year period of the earth's temporal existence basically covered most of the life of Noah. We see another horse which is red in color and the rider was to take peace from the earth and that the people of the earth would kill on another. The rider was given a great sword. The color red represents violence and blood. The wickedness of the people on the earth had increased to the point of excessive violence.

Genesis 6:10-13
10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

As Revelation 6:4 above tells us, with their violence they were killing one another. Great corruptions were on the earth at that time peace was actually taken from off the face of the earth. The Lord saw fit to take them off the earth and start afresh with a new generation.

The days of Noah is a type of how the earth will be before the second great cleansing of the earth when Christ will come in his glory and destroy the wicked from the face of the earth.

When the Lord opens the third seal which represents the 3rd thousand year period of the earth's temporal existence, we read:

Revelation 6:5-6
5 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.
6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.

The 3rd seal covers the time of a few hundred years after the flood to the building of Solomon's Temple. The era of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Saul, David, and Solomon are within this time frame. In this seal we see the entrance of a black horse whose rider is carrying a pair of balances in his hand. The color black is a representation of famine, starvation and death. During this era we see Joseph interpret the Pharoah's dream of seven healthy cows and seven sickly cows. He also dreams seven good stalks of corn and seven bad stalks of corn. Joseph tells him the two dreams are one and that there will be seven years of plenty and then seven years of famine. Joseph is exalted in the Pharoah's court and is placed over storing of food for the seven plenty years so that they will be prepared for the seven years of famine. When the seven years of famine came, we see that it was not just in Egypt but in many lands that the famine occurs. Joseph's father requires his son's to journey to Egypt to buy food. It was because of this sore famine that Jacob was reunited with his son Joseph and that Joseph had become a temporal savior of many by storing the food that he did. The weighing of food in a balance in the revelation is indicative of famine and rationing of food.

Other evidences of famines during the 3rd seal:

2 Samuel 21:1
1 Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David inquired of the Lord. And the Lord answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.

Genesis 12:10
10 And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land.

Kings 8:1
1 Then spake Elisha unto the woman, whose son he had restored to life, saying, Arise, and go thou and thine household, and sojourn wheresoever thou canst sojourn: for the Lord hath called for a famine; and it shall also come upon the land seven years.

There were many famines that occurred during this era known as the 3rd seal. Thus the rider and his horse represent the coming famines upon the earth during this 1000 year period.

When the Lord opens the 4th seal which represents the 4th thousand year period of the earth's temporal existence, we read:

Revelation 6:7-8
7 And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.
8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

This 4th thousand year period of the earth's temporal existence spans from the time after the building of Solomon's temple to the end of our Savior's time on this earth. It is represented by a pale horse and a rider whose name is Death of which hell follows with him. Power was given him to kill with the sword, with hunger, death, and the beasts of the earth. The color pale seems to indicate death and life. The darker being death and lighter being life. I believe because of the ministry of Christ being at the end of this era, it gives light to the color. But other than that we see a great deal of death in the earth.

It is interesting that the rider of the horse was given power to kill with sword, hunger, death and beasts of the earth. When Daniel the prophet saw images of the future in dreams and visions, he likened the powers that ruled on the earth to beasts. It is believed that his vision of beasts was the same as the vision he had of the great image. The vision of the four beasts were the same as the four parts of the great image. The first great beast which is also represented by the head of the great image was none other than the kingdom of Babylon. The second beast which also was represented by the chest and two arms of the image represented the Medo-Persian Empire. The third beast which was also represented as the belly of the image was none other than the Greco-Macedonian Empire. The fourth beast which was also represented by the two legs of the image which was great and terrible was a representation of the Roman-Holy Roman Empire. So I find it very interesting that the rider was given power to kill with the beasts of the earth. This would be an interesting topic to cover in another thread.

With all the conquests of these world powers, certainly many lives were lost and much death occurred during the 4th seal. Obviously these conquests were wars that involved the sword, hunger, and death and as pointed out above were done by the beasts of the earth. Certainly the killing by conquest would bring hell to those who instigate these wars to gain power. So think that the rider and his pale horse is great representation of the massive deaths that occurred during this era of the 4th seal.

From your comment I take it that you don't give a dingo's kidney. But there may be those who might be interested in knowing what the LDS believe in regard to the Book of Revelation and how we view the prophesy.

When the Lord opens the 5th seal which represents the 5th thousand year period of the earth's temporal existence, we read:

Revelation 6:9-11
9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
11 And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.

The fifth seal, represents the time of Apostles and their martyrdom along with the martyrdom of many of the the saints of those days. It includes, in my estimation, the thousand years since the death and resurrection of Christ. I would say 34 A.D. through 1033 A.D. This is not a doctrine but a personal belief. Others in the church believe the 5th seal to include the life Christ and to go from 1 B.C. to 999 A.D. or 1 A.D. to 1000 A.D. or somewhere close to that. But relatively it is approximately the same era.

During this time we fine the murders of 11 of the 12 Apostles. All except John. Many of the followers and members of the Church of Christ are also killed during this era. We see that those who died in the faith were given white robes. During this era, LDS believe that the church was eventually taken from the earth to be restored at a future time. It is interesting that there are no more horses and horsemen associated with this and the following seals. It is also noteworthy that at some future time there would be others that are of the faith who would also be killed as these martyrs were killed. Possibly during the time before the second coming of Jesus.

A little off the beaten path for the topic but relevant, Far Cry 5 the game mixes mainstream Christianity with Mormonism and other cultish groups in a prepper end of the world scenario.

The main character is called Joseph Seed, rather than Joseph Smith. The various parallels to real world religions are quite obvious.

When the Lord opens the 6th seal which represents the 6th thousand year period of the earth's temporal existence, we read:

Revelation 6:12-17
12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

The events shown when the sixth seal is opened have not yet occurred. These things will happen before the end of the sixth seal before the second coming of Christ.

In Doctrine and Covenants 77 Joseph Smith was shown the following things concerning the 7th chapter of Revelation:

Doctrine and Covenants 77:8-11
8 Q. What are we to understand by the four angels, spoken of in the 7th chapter and 1st verse of Revelation?A. We are to understand that they are four angels sent forth from God, to whom is given power over the four parts of the earth, to save life and to destroy; these are they who have the everlasting gospel to commit to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people; having power to shut up the heavens, to seal up unto life, or to cast down to the regions of darkness.
9 Q. What are we to understand by the angel ascending from the east, Revelation 7th chapter and 2nd verse?A. We are to understand that the angel ascending from the east is he to whom is given the seal of the living God over the twelve tribes of Israel; wherefore, he crieth unto the four angels having the everlasting gospel, saying: Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. And, if you will receive it, this is Elias which was to come to gather together the tribes of Israel and restore all things.
10 Q. What time are the things spoken of in this chapter to be accomplished?A. They are to be accomplished in the sixth thousand years, or the opening of the sixth seal.
11 Q. What are we to understand by sealing the one hundred and forty-four thousand, out of all the tribes of Israel—twelve thousand out of every tribe?A. We are to understand that those who are sealed are high priests, ordained unto the holy order of God, to administer the everlasting gospel; for they are they who are ordained out of every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, by the angels to whom is given power over the nations of the earth, to bring as many as will come to the church of the Firstborn.

Here is a link to Revelation 7

Great calamities are to occur before the Great Day of the Lord to come.
