Palin Africa/Continent Statements Prove to be a Hoax
Alex Knapp | Thursday, November 13, 2008

The New York Times has investigated Fox News’s report that McCain staffers claimed that Sarah Palin did not know that Africa was a continent. As I had suspected, the story was a complete hoax.

It was among the juicier post-election recriminations: Fox News Channel quoted an unnamed McCain campaign figure as saying that Sarah Palin did not know that Africa was a continent.

Who would say such a thing? On Monday the answer popped up on a blog and popped out of the mouth of David Shuster, an MSNBC anchor. “Turns out it was Martin Eisenstadt, a McCain policy adviser, who has come forward today to identify himself as the source of the leaks,” Mr. Shuster said.

Trouble is, Martin Eisenstadt doesn’t exist. His blog does, but it’s a put-on. The think tank where he is a senior fellow — the Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy — is just a Web site. The TV clips of him on YouTube are fakes.

And the claim of credit for the Africa anecdote is just the latest ruse by Eisenstadt, who turns out to be a very elaborate hoax that has been going on for months.

One of the problems with the 24-hour news cycle is that there is a lot of pressure to just get new stories out there, which makes it easier to get stories run on less than credible evidence. In theory, the “new media” of the blogosphere is supposed to be a check on this, right? But bloggers have the same kinds of pressure to keep adding new content in order to keep visits and hits up. The result is frequently that some stories get pounced on right away. This is especially the case because a lot of times this type of story fits conveniently in with a bloggers’ bias. (Indeed, I have been guilty of this myself.)

A little skepticism is always in order.

UPDATE (James Joyner): An AP story on this matter says, “The hoax was limited to the identity of the source in the story about Palin — not the Fox News story itself. While Palin has denied that she mistook Africa for a country, the veracity of that report was not put in question by the revelation that Eisenstadt is a phony.”

If the hoax is merely Eisenstadt having claimed to the Carl Cameron’s source — when in fact the source was an actual “McCain campaign insider” — the story is still alive. If, contrariwise, Eisenstadt was the source of the story itself, then it’s dead.

The war coverage is becoming routine
When New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman reflected on the first dozen days of what he called NATO's "surgical bombing," he engaged in a common style of easy punditry. "Let's see what 12 weeks of less than surgical bombing does," he wrote. "Give war a chance."

This week, the New York Times and other major U.S. media outlets have pounced on references in a new report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to 18 alleged secret documents, which the Times suggests shows that Iran had made significant advances towards developing a nuclear weapon before its program was ended in 2003.

John Kerry doesn't have enough personal dignity to make him worthy of carrying Palin's used tampons. :anj_stfu:

Some of these blow hard liberals need to go sit on Kerry's lap and let him tell them some more Swift Boat stories.

When engaged in public speaking, it is not uncommon to make a mistake while addressing a crowd. I see you have pegged Sarah Palin and George Bush as idiots because of their blunders. I wonder why you didn't toss Joe Biden into that group because on national tv he asked a wheelchair bound person who had no legs to stand up. Just how ignorant was that?

Probably thinks it's one of those 57 states Obama spoke of ....:eusa_whistle:

Don't think post this will stop it from popping up in a dozen different places again anyway. It's all about perpetuating the lie until people believe it's the truth. GOT to be on page 1 of the leftwingnut handbook.

Already learned that no matter how many time ya tell 'em, you have to keep beatin' them over the head.

What the McCain campaign did to Palin was disgusting.

They chose her for the ticket. Her presence created legit political buzz that the McCain campaign needed. McCain had not formed much of an energetic base - Palin formed that base within days.

As those days turned to weeks, the McCain camp grew increasingly agitated over Palin's popularity, and McCain's lack thereof. A solo McCain rally would bring about 5000 supporters out. A solo Palin rally would bring upwards of 20000 out.

Initially, the McCain campaign was defending Palin against the liberal media onslaught against here - a reaction based upon absolute fear of Palin - fear which quickly turned to vitriol.

As Palin's popularity climbed, the McCain folks started to stand back and let the media attacks continue unchallenged. Palin kept her head down and continued to do whatever the McCain campaign asked of her, even while privately sharing frustrations that it was a campaign floundering and unwilling to allow her the freedom to utilize her own natural political skills.

By the remaining weeks of the campaign, the McCain group was actively working against Palin, and John McCain himself was allowing it to happen. They needed someone to blame - and so they joined with the liberal media - an institution McCain himself has consistently fawned over, in diminishing Palin.

The fact remains, that Palin was more qualified to be President than Obama. She made fewer gaffes, and public scenes of embarrasment than Joe Biden. And she was far more popular with conservatives than John McCain, who in the end, became increasingly hostile to these same conservatives who were essential to his hopes of becoming President.

Sarah Palin managed that extremely difficult situation with ample dignity and fortitute, which is more than can be said for John McCain.
