John Boehner and Republicans want YOU to pick up BP's Tab

Why should the Federal Government pay a dime?

You're right...the feds should sit on their asses while the oil wipes out the coast and the economy in Florida.
I'm wondering where all-o'-those boot-strapped "conservatives", Libertarians and Teabaggers are....those folks who're ALWAYS insisting THEY can do a better-job than the U.S. Government!!!!

Why aren't THEY rushing-down to take-over clean-up efforts??

And, why aren't those grand BOOT-STRAP SALESMEN (i.e. Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, O'Reilly) LEADING THE CHARGE??!!!!

Uh...did you even bother to read this? He clearly said "BP and the Federal government".

Considering that the Feds have collected an 8 cent per barrel tax to cover the costs of oil spill disasters (for a cumulative amount to date of $1.5B) - why shouldn't the Feds spend some of the money collected to cover the costs of oil spills on an actual oil spill?

We have Already Picked Up The Tab - which the Feds are bogarting.

Interesting corporate welfare logic.

So the government collects taxes on we citizens, too.

If we screw up and cause an environmental disaster, should the government pay their share of our tab, too?

Gee, the same argument about the Government not paying attention could be said of the Banks bailout since the Government didn't have proper regulations put in. Yet I'm willing to bet a good deal of money that most of you calling for BP to be bailed out didn't want those bailouts.

Consistency people.

You obviously have no clue how the maritime industry or MODU/off shore drilling regulatory process works...I'll chalk that up to your youth and lack of experience in the real world.

This IS IN NO WAY comparable to a fucking bank bailout and regulations in place in the financial sector.
oooooooooooooooooooooooooo.....you surely did school Modbert on the maritime industry or MODU/off shore drilling regulatory process!!

Ol' Modbert must feel totally-overwhelmed, after all o' the details you provided....from the real world.

How much money they get each month is inconsequential at this point. The fact is...the U.S. government approved their drilling plan without adequate safety measures in place. Obama said as much in his speech today. Therefore the U.S. government will end up shouldering some of the blame....and cost.

Whate happened to BP's safety measures? And since when have you ever been FOR government regulation of private corporations?

Oh give me a fucking break...where have I said I wanted no regulation of industry....
I work in the oil industry and see DAILY what purpose various regulations serve.
Yeah....those Cheney-approved regulations have had a HUUUUUUUGE-impact, to-date.

Well, yes. That's the dirty little secret they don't want to discuss. But the fact is they have collected $1.5B just for such a disaster as we are now experiencing. There is plenty of unspent Stimulus Pork that could be allocated to the Pretend Oil Disaster Clean Up Trust Fund.

The porkulus is pure debt spending. That money doesn't exist either. BP should be paying for the mess they caused. The taxpayers shouldn't be paying a dime of it.

BP are paying for it.

But... that does not let the government off the hook for explaining where the $1.5bn is that they were supposed to have put aside for just this type of event. Let's not overlook the government's culpability in this whole debacle.

That money is GONE and unless you want to end up in the gulag you prolly best stop asking questions...........

The interesting part for me is the fact that the tax was collected and we HAD NO RESPONSE. The entire time I have heard that the government does not have the equipment or the expertise to contain the spill. Well, WHY THE FUCK NOT IF THERE HAS BEEN 1.5 BILLION COLLECTED FOR OIL SPILLS. Bullshit if you ask me. We should be there NOW cleaning up NOW and spending that money NOW. We can collect from BP later as that is their place but the more important thing is to get this spill contained ASAP.

Do you not realize that the real money, the real impact, will be that which is lost from the economy and environmental damage to come. Avoiding as much of that as possible will be the way to reduce the impact on the taxpayer, not play the blame game while oil spews into the ocean. We have lots of time for that later, AFTER this has been fixed.

Hmm, wonder who was in charge when the government did not have the equipment that their very own contingency plan called for having? I can think of two lame ass Presidents who need to kick each others asses over that ordeal.

And what about the Jones Act? A swipe of his pen and th at Act is suspended so that the Gulf can get badly needed help in there. But the ass kicker in chief too busy listening to pualie make fun of boosh to bother with that.

So.....using our Coast Guard is now FREE to you people?

Both involve regulations, in the case of the oil spill, government failed on their end if I'm reading your post correctly.

My main point is this, there is no reason why the taxpayer has to be footed with half of the bill.

The courts will determine how much burden the government will shoulder...it certainly won't be half....and the fine BP is going to have to pay will offset any burden placed on the taxpayer.
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight......just like oil-profit$ covered our expen$e$, in Iraq.

certainly it is, are you not reading the thread in current events where they are claiming that it's perfectly acceptable to expect the coast guard, or presumably any part of the USG to come and save your ass when you do something stupid and can't save yourself and that they shouldn't charge you one red dime?

What happened to BP's safety measures? What kind of jackass question is that? They HAD NONE!!!! The plan they had on paper WAS APPROVED BY MMS!!!!!! But that plan wasn't worth the paper it was typed on!

So, why are you railing against a Federal Government emergency plan if the fucking drilling company doesn't even have one?

Becauser the Federal Government believed BP's plan was a good one...

Hey there scarecrow. Mind telling me where anybody said we shouldn't use the $1.5B in taxes already collected?

Then what are we waiting for Cowardly Lion? Why not spend some of those funds now to contain the oil and protect the coasts and wetlands?

Do that now? Why? How can the dems stump with "look what the GOP and their oil friends did to our coastline" in October if it is cleaned up by then?
Ah, yes.....because "conservatives", Libertarians & Teabaggers are ALREADY ON-THE-JOB, SHOWIN' Dems how capable "real Americans" are at cleaning-up-the-mess, right?

Pick up BPs Tab?

HELL NO you can't!

No man! I love the GOP position! The old "screw the little guy" mentality is finally coming out. I think it is the right call and will certainly make the GOP totally irrelevant. I hope they keep beating the drums for their oil buddies. To think, they want a company that is owned on another continent to be bailed out by US Tax Payers. I think it is a great move and they should make it part of their national platform.:clap2:

funny,, you don't mind screwing over the taxpayer when it comes to funding the hordes of illegals.....
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo......so-many details, about how the hordes of illegals are being funded.

Hey asshole....exactly where did the GOP say they want to bail out BP?

Do you know anything about the law? Are you aware that BP, by law, is only obligated to pay 75 million? A law spurned by the Valdez accident and signed into law by clinton several years later?

Unlike the Dems that want you to believe they can "kick ass" and make BP pay, the GOP is more practical in this situation saying "we better start cleaning up this mess before it has consequences we can not control"
Ah, yes......just like the GOP's mission-statement on the Environment; in-general.

We don't know that yet - and it's cold comfort to allow the damage to continue while the Feds standby holding the $1.5B they've collected in taxes for oil disaster relief.

 That's not the American way. The American way is to scream hysterically and use media provided 'facts' to nail anyone as long as it isn't us.
....More-commonly known as The Gingrich Rule.

Issue an executive order, seize this company now, call it socialism, call it communism, call it stupidity , call it anything you want, but the solution is to invade a sovereign nation and still from shareholders to take over this company THAT is the solution.

So Boehner has backed off now? I guess the kitchen was getting a little hot for him. He will have to come up with another idea to help his oil buddies.

Boehner is not as dumb as boedicca it seems. Boedicca is left out blowing in the wind now. This is funny stuff.

Hey, we should help BP and pay. Bedicaa said yup, now Boner is saying well maybe we shouldn't pay for this mess, so I wonder if Boedicca's mind will change as well? lol

Funny...I saw a discussion on the governments response to the whole oil disaster and guess what....Americans are by a large margin very disastisfied with the governments response. This is called "blowback".
Yeah....and, it was totally-unexpected.....
