I personally think it's just from the experiences we go thru in life that set us all on our own paths to prefer one thing or another. One of my friends had a daughter who was my sons best playmate, when they were 3-7 years old, until they moved away. They were an inseparable pair. When she was four and five, she declared she was a boy, and her name was Ted. Which was her dad's name. She dressed like a boy, play rough like a boy, even tried to pee standing up at the toilet with the other boys. In today's world, she'd probably be sent to the doctor for sex reassignment, and everyone at school would be forced to call her Ted.

She was not pigeonholed as a lesbian, and was allowed just be a kid, and she grew out of that phase. She is now a happily married woman, with three kids.

Some of it for sure is environmental and parenting. For example, you'll find that a majority of girls who are not as attractive and very overweight end up announcing that they're gay or bi at some point in life. Then there were little boys that hung around girls all the time, never played sports, etc. and that eventually came out of the closet, to no one's surprise. Hard to tell if there is a physiological component to sexual orientation or gender change.
