Actually, a lot of the "Jedi" ideas and mystique George Lucas ripped off from the Japanese Shinto religion. Which isn't a bad thing, actually, because Shintoists never seem to cause anybody any trouble. But a lot of Star Wars fans who identify as "Jedis" are really following the Shinto religion but don't realize it. If I'm not mistaken, Shintoism teaches that all life creates a certain "energy web" that binds everyone and everything in nature together the way Yoda described it.
