But then not all of black people were slaves. There was no way they were going to be able to keep black people out of citizenship. You can't expect to keep such people and for them not to gain their freedom, mix with the general populace at times.

Also, citizenship was given through laws, not through the Constitution. There you have a mighty problem. For the Constitution is about the fundamentals of the country.
