IT BEGINS: 15-Point Plunge For GOP Senator After Gun Vote

WASHINGTON -- A new poll has New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R) down a total of 15 points from her previous approval rating in a survey that followed her vote against requiring background checks for firearms purchases.

Ayotte's plunge underscores the changing politics around gun control and gun safety. In years past, lawmakers worried that a vote for gun control would bring the anger of the National Rifle Association. In the new reality, votes against gun control also carry a political risk, as the Ayotte poll indicates.

A full three-quarters of New Hampshire voters support such background checks, along with 56 percent of Republicans, according to Public Policy Polling. A WMUR Granite State Poll taken in January and February found that more than 9 in 10 state residents supported implementing background checks at gun shows.

It's not entirely clear yet how opposition to background checks will play out at the polls, but there are signs Ayotte’s vote may have taken a toll.

In October, the last time that PPP surveyed voters about Ayotte, she had a 48-35 approval rating. She has now tumbled underwater, with 46 percent disapproving and 44 percent approving. The 11-point surge in disapproval threatens Ayotte's 2016 reelection, when she could face popular Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan. Ayotte won her 2010 race by 23 points, but in a hypothetical matchup against Hassan trails 46-44.

Forty-five percent of independents in the state disapproved of Ayotte, up 13 points since October. Half of voters said her vote on background checks made them less inclined to vote for her, with only a quarter saying it made them more likely to support her.

Gutsy of her... It's nice when a Senator especially from the socialist's stronghold of New England chooses integrity and constitutional rights for all Americans over political aspirations.:clap2:

I doubt any Democrat now-a-days would chose the American people's rights over political ambitions. Alas, Democrat leadership are no more than gutless bastards anymore..:eusa_hand:

there is no way the live free or die state is giving up their gun rights. what is more interesting is in the liberal stronghold of ny cuomo's ratings fell 35% with the passage of the safe act. looking at the responses on his FB page 90% oppose his tougher gun laws. the 4 democrats who voted to oppose background checks knew they would be out if they didn't. they know what americans are really thinking. 20,000,000 new applications for gun permits in 2012. that isn't the same gun owners buying more guns. that is new gun owners. support for the 2nd amendment is only growing stronger

Notice Public Policy Polling doesn't poll democrats who voted against the bill. The reason is that PPP is an arm of the democrat party. It's what they call a push poll designed to influence elections rather than predict them. They select the questions and poll certain demographics to achieve the result they are looking for.

Having owned property in New Hampshire and spending a great deal of time there, I don't see this poll reflecting the real feelings of NH residents.
NH is one of the few states in the country that allows open carry and is a "sha;; issue" state for concealed carry.
The state has, I believe the least restrictive firearms laws in New England, if not the country. According to state laws, about the only place you can't take a firearm is into a state court house.
Other federal restrictions do apply, but NH State police do not as a rule, enforce federal laws.

yes it does. you don't a permit to buy any gun. you only need a permit to conceal carry. but any one can buy any gun, and they have fought to keep it that way

anything to deny whats really happening

What is really happening?

In the wake of Newtown, people understandably want legislators to "fix the problem".
The Liberals and the Media keep telling us that a class of guns is to blame, even though that class accounts for about 1% of US gun deaths. They want Congress to outlaw 30 round magazines without knowing what that really means. One Congress critter actually thought that 30 round magazines would disappear once the bullets in them were fired.
Public opinion was such that no one in Congress wanted their fingerprints on assault weapons and high capacity magazine bans, but "We HAVE to do something to save the chilrun!"
So the talk moves to the evil "gun show loop hole".
The so called loop hole is that sometimes, people outside of a gun show strike a private sale. Sales inside the show are subject to background checks.
So, what Libs really mean is they want private citizens to conduct background checks, delve into the criminal and medical records of their neighbors and submit the proper form with the appropriate fee, to some government bureaucracy.
Seeing most legal private sales and transfers are between friends and family, these persons can reasonably be expected to be legally able to own a weapon.
In my case, 8 weapons that I own, (all long guns) have been left to me by my late father, uncle and son. Should the 3 of them have conducted background checks on me in the moments before they passed?
Enhanced, extended, whatever you want to call it, background checks will keep few, if any guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens, will do nothing to prevent black market sales and will not prevent or mitigate the next Sandy Hook.
It will, make Democrats feel good about themselves, however, and after all, that's what's important here.

in the wake of Newton, the residents of Newton just voted down a budget to include added security in their schools. I guess they have been able to put a price on the lives of their school children. and as a result we see the agenda really has been about guns as opposed to safety

Ignored common sense comments.

Just wondering if New Hampshire wants gun control why hasn't the state created any new gun control bills?

Again a poll from a liberal polling place is supposed to mean something. When the people of the state of New Hampshire push their state legislature for new gun control laws you'll have something.
Until then I'd drop the bullshit.

When they are linking to HuffPo Canada they must be desperate.

Agreed, best poll opinion poll to watch is at the state legislature level. Such as what new control bills have the state of New Hampshire generated in the past two years?

When they are linking to HuffPo Canada they must be desperate.

You all should just stay the inflexible course, complacent, in denial and oblivious to what voters are interested in.

Democrats like you that way..

Fine what the voters want. When will the voters of New Hampshire push for new gun control laws at the state level?

I'm glad she's lost points. Matter of fact, I hope this spreads, and anyone who voted against the bill is taken out of office and told to go home.

That would be about 4 Dems and almost all of the GOP.

When was the last time New Hampshire created any gun control legislation? If this poll is a true view of the people of the state of New Hampshire they would start with thier own state laws.

That's what comes form belonging to a party that doesn't believe in facts.
The Sunlight Foundation ran the numbers and found that after spending nearly $11 million in the general election, the National Rifle Association got a less than one percent return on its investment this cycle. That is, less than one percent of the money went toward the desired result.
The group supported 27 winning candidates, but most of its money was spent targeting winning Democrats (including over $7 million against President Obama) or bolstering losing Republicans (including $1.8 million supporting Mitt Romney and $500,000 backing Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock).
National Rifle Association shut out on Election Day

Making up your own polls doesn't count in the end.
Fact: Thieves and black marketeers don't have to pass background checks, fool.

So your argument is that because bad people bent on criminal intent won't respect a law then there's no point in having that law.

I suppose that's a point of view.
