Is the U.S. Credit Rating a Victim of GOP Sabotage?

But Congressional Republicans deserve much more of the blame. For this calamity was entirely man-made -- even intentional. The contemporary Republican Party is fixated on taxes. It possesses an iron-clad belief that the existing tax rates should never go up, that loopholes shouldn't be closed unless they're offset by other tax reductions, that the fact that hedge fund managers pay lower tax rates than school teachers makes complete sense, that a reversion to the tax rates of the prosperous 1990's or 1980's would be unacceptable.

In the past two years, this attitude has combined with a general hostility to playing ball with Democrats on large legislative issues, a near-blanket refusal to conduct business with President Obama, and, since the arrival of the raucous Tea Party freshman, a cavalier attitude toward the nation's obligations. It was common to hear duly elected legislators argue that it wouldn't be a big deal if the government were to pierce the debt ceiling and default on its debts.

Top Congressional Republicans have expressed a desire to deny victories to the president.

GOP sabotage? Look at the Debt chart, then recall who extended the Bush Tax cuts. Agreed that the Bush admin was terrible, but the BO admin isn't any better. the dems are taking us deeper into the ditch.

The extension of the Bush Tax Cuts were done because of the extortionist tactics of the GOP during the budget debate. The GOP wanted the long term unemployed to be homeless and wouldn't budge on extending UC benefits unless the Bush Tax Cuts were extended.

Same with the latest battle... the debt ceiling. Yes... our debt is troublesome. But the ridiculous stance of our Congress on raising the debt ceiling hurt our country more than it helped. This debt problem is not going to get fixed without getting rid of the Bush Cuts and investing in our damned country. It seems that our Private Sector is more interested in investing outside of the country, so I suppose it's up to the Public Sector to do what the Private Sector is unwilling to do. Unfortunately, that means more debt.

The thing is.... our everyday people are hurting. Most Americans fall into the "labor" category. For some reason, this group of people have been marginalized for the past 30 years. The problem with that is, when everyday people are hurting, they don't have the disposable income to buy the things that keep our economy rolling. Unemployment, underemployment and a high cost of living are directly responsible for our economy swirling down the toilet. People need to work and be paid enough to not only survive, but enough to afford to spend without going into debt(which the banks are more than happy to put them into).

That, combined with getting rid of the Bush Tax cuts will do wonders to get the economy rolling again.. People spend, businesses do better, Businesses do better, they hire more people, more people working, more people have money. It's relatively simple.

But that's not what is in vogue these days. What seems to be the norm is that things all begin and end with business and whatever they do to rake in huge profits is good for America.. no matter what. Lay off workers? yep.. do it. Outsource jobs? Go for it. Reduce the pay of low to mid level workers? You betcha. It's even to the point where they want to get rid of the minimum wage... even though the minimum wage isn't sustainable to much of anyone.

We can see the results of this philosophy... it's a disaster.

Until we get back to the idea that Labor is just as important, if not MORE important than business, this will continue. We spent all this time and energy in creating this Supply side, consumer driven economy.... and for the past 30 years, we have been kneecapping the Consumer. It simply makes no sense.

recall who extended the Bush Tax cuts.

What were the circumstances behind them getting extended?

Ah, yes. There it is.

we know that the Dims aren't concerned about a healthy economy. Their agenda is spend, spend, spend and sharing the wealth - the economy be damned.

Us Credit rating dowgraded.

Its the victim of nearly 50 years of mismanagment by the duelopoly.

It's mismanagment only if one assumes that the duelopoly's real agenda was a healthy and vibrant nation.

I'm not entirely convinced that was (or is!) their agenda.

Ok, this takes ignorant to a whole new level.

I'm tired of both sides pandering to the fringe of their party. Time to start letting the moderates of both sides work out what is best for the country.

We can't continue this brinkmanship to see who blinks first.

The Dims are all communists. There is no "fringe."

Not to mention, they got EXACTLY what they wanted... more debt, spending and taxes.

I disagree. A "moderate" approach to the problem we now face will NOT fix it. We need DRACONIAN CUTS in spending to even BEGIN to get us back on track, and that is NOT "moderate."

Sadly, it's only the Tea Party and some Republicans trying to cut spending. The democrats still want to spend, spend, spend like the wind. Evidently this is their plan until the dollar is completely worthless and America defaults on it's debt. Then our credit rating will be F, and the whole world will suffer. America will either then erupt in total anarchy, or Civil War II.

The two party system is not working. It is all or nothing for both parties

S&P just slapped us in the face and told us to start acting like adults

No shit---you're just now figuring this out? While you partisan hacks have been busy blaming each other the parties have taken the opportunity to steal America blind. They had better join forces soon if it's not too late.

The GOP held food on struggling American's tables hostage in exchange for tax cut extensions for high earners.

Idiot.
