Is the term TeaBagger turning into hate speech?

The Left are expressing hate with that term but i do not support "Hate Speech Laws" so while i may disagree with them expressing their hate i must also accept their right to free speech. It is what it is.

Bear with me here on this one.

Most of the people who use "Teabagger" in a negative way to describe tea party protesters typically also claim its a white conservative movement in the country.

So based on the fact that it is hurtful speech directed at a people who are looked at as white, conservative, and angry at the govt is calling them "Teabaggers" hatespeach akin to other derogatory words used for various groups of people.

The tea party is also considered a specific social group so it could come under that classification also.

hate speech - Legal Definition
Speech not protected by the First Amendment, because it is intended to foster hatred against individuals or groups based on race, religion, gender, sexual preference, place of national origin, or other improper classification.

hate speech: Definition from Answers.com
Bigoted speech attacking or disparaging a social or ethnic group or a member of such a group.

Hate speech - Definition
is a controversial term for speech intended to degrade, intimidate, or incite violence or prejudicial action against someone based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, or disability. The term covers written as well as oral communication.

It sure sounds like it qualifies as hate speech so I may have to watch myself with that term in the future.

Hmmm..... I hadn't heard any government officials refer to the Tea Party members as Teabaggers. The only people I've heard refer to them that way are regular citizens who don't hold any political office (elected or appointed).

:eusa_eh:

And what does that have to do with the price of tea bags in China?

I'm not a big fan of the whole "laws on speech" idea myself. I find it to be a stick in the eye of the first ammendment.

Considering that we do have laws about it I was just curious if people felt this type of derogatory terminology fit under the description of the hate speech laws.

Semantics are fun for me.

really? I didn't know Teabagger was a derogatory label. I thought conservatives where proud to use the Tea Party union label.:eusa_whistle:

I think demorats should take that word "historic" and jam it up their "collective" azzes.

I suppose if you buy this line of reasoning, being called a liberal, or a a and leftist, or a socialist by conservative haters is tantamount to hate speech.

I doubt very much you like playing with semantic meanings as much as you like playing with yourself in a classroom (USMB) full of morons.

Obviously the Left are expressing hate with their use of that term. While that is pretty sad,i believe "Hate Speech Laws" are much worse. No Nations that have "Hate Speech Laws" can truly say they are free nations. That's just how i feel anyway. Let the Left express their bitter hate. It is their right.

Is not motive and intent a big part of hate speech (and hate crimes in general)?

If so, then of course the term qualifies. Those that use it are more often than not motivated by their hatred towards those they brand with the label.

That said, I'm with boedi. I think the whole concept of hate speech and hate crimes is a bunch of anti-American, anti-First Amendment bull shit.

AMEN to that man. I had to go back several pages to find a sane post in here. Its the intent thing that creates the "hate speech"

I've already said the same a handful of times but it doesn't help the wingnuts in full defense mode here so they ignore that part of what I said, i believe I also stated early on I was playing with semantics once again as I tend to do on the forum

fuckin' idjit post.

like I told the other one...

Using this line of reasoning you'd agree that neocon, liberal, leftie and socialist or commies qualifies.

If I call you a liberal with the intent to demean and hurt you instead of accurately describing what your political leanings MAY be then yes, which is why hate speech laws are ridiculous (along with unconstitutional).

I know i shouldn't play with the retarded for personal enjoyment but there are so many here and some are even posting in this thread for me so I just can't help myself. :)

The term "tea bagger" is demeaning and hateful in and of itself. When the leftwingfuckwads get scared, they use the media to vilify. It would take actual balls to get in someone's face, look them in the eye and express an opinion.

Perhaps their lack of balls explains their obsession with sucking on someone else's.
