Iran seems to be taking a more moderate tack in its relationship with Jews. It'll be interesting to see if this is lasting or this guy just signed his own death warrant.

Rouhani, a Shiite Muslim cleric, was elected president in June. He is widely seen as more moderate than Ahmadinejad, though his goodwill gesture on Wednesday stunned even veteran Iran watchers.

It's amazing how some of the stupidest posts get hundreds of replies, but a really interesting global event gets none. :eusa_eh:

Iran, has a pretty large population of people who follow the Jewish religion.

One of the largest in the region, outside of Israel.

And it was a nice gesture.

They used to. Most of them have gotten the hell out of dodge.

Iran's Jewish population was reduced from 100,000–150,000 in 1948 to about 80,000 immediately before the Iranian Revolution, due mostly to immigration to Israel. While immigration to Israel had slowed in the 1970s and the Jewish population of Iran had stabilized, the majority of Iran's remaining Jews left the country in the aftermath of the overthrow of the Shah. In recent years, the Jewish population of Iran was estimated by most sources to be 25,000,[15][16][17][18] though estimates varied, with some as low as 17,000[19] and as high as 40,000.[20] However, a census in August 2012 indicated that there were only 8,756 Jews still living in Iran.[21] Notable population centers include Tehran, Isfahan (1,200),[22] and Shiraz. Historically, Jews maintained a presence in many more Iranian cities. Jews are protected in the Iranian constitution and seat is reserved for a Jew in the Majlis.[16] Iran hosts the largest Jewish population of any Muslim-majority country.[23] After Israel, it is home to the second-largest Jewish population in the Middle East.[15]

In Iran the president's opinion matters less than the main mullah and his Guardian's council.
