Micromax today announced it has launched its operations in Russia with a tie-up with VVP Group, a distributor known for introducing new brands. The partnership will bring the brand’s Canvas and Bolt range of smartphones in over 9,000 retail outlets across Russia. Back in October last year, we had reported about the Indian mobile phone brand’s ambitious plans to expand its presence to Russia and other Eastern European countries.

Micromax aims to launch 14 smartphones in Russia by the end of the year and set an infrastructure that includes more than 60 service centers throughout the country. Additionally, Micromax has also tied up with other partners like Odnoklassniki and IVI.ru (a popular Russian social network) for providing value added content on its smartphones.

The year 2013 turned out quite well for Micromax as it became the second biggest smartphone brand gunning for Samsung and the third largest overall mobile phone brand in India. The company claims it is the eleventh biggest mobile phone brand in the world and aims to breach into the top ten this year with its expansion plans in more markets.

In order to gain a more global image, Micromax roped in Hollywood star Hugh Jackman as its new brand ambassador. This year, Micromax unveiled its first dual-OS tablet called Laptab at CES and also plans on launching 4G LTE-enabled smartphones.
