Alaska Airlines and Virgin America have canceled 46 flights at five Northeast airports Wednesday and Thursday as a large, powerful winter storm that’s being described as a “bomb cyclone" approaches the region.

So far, 25 flights were canceled on Wednesday and 21 flights have been axed on Thursday, Alaska said in a winter weather travel advisory.

Heavy snow and hurricane-force winds are forecast, especially in New England, and most Alaska and Virgin America flights in and out of Boston, New York's Kennedy and LaGuardia airports, Newark and Philadelphia have been canceled as a precaution.

An additional 40 flights could be canceled Thursday, the SeaTac-based airline warned, saying its officials are closely monitoring the conditions.

"Flights will only operate when it’s safe to do so," Alaska Airlines said.

In Boston, the National Weather Service is predicting blizzard conditions and severe whiteouts, adding: "Travel will be dangerous. Damage to trees and power lines expected. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 11 inches across the coastal interior, with localized amounts up to 15 inches, are expected."
