Who wants to punish the rich? A progressive tax system is not punishment. Asking those who make astronomical amounts of money to pay a bigger percentage of their income in taxes for the good of society as a whole is not punishment. Now if someone suggests taxing them 75% or more, then I would tend to agree with you, but nobody with any sense is asking for that.
