I actually don't think you should give it back. But then what about the people who pay in to the system and then need to get help either through food stamps, unemployment, etc....Calling them freeloaders is hypocritical. (not calling you out specifically) They are entitled to this aid just as you are entitled to what you need.

Food stamps is a program I support wholeheartedly...although I do believe there should be a bit more regulation with it. There should be only select places you can redeem them for food as they should be treated as a stop gap and not a way of life for people...and the food should be nutritional and the amount enough to ensure 3 healthy meals a day per person per family.

Unemployment is insurance...the employee purchases such insurance with a .60 cent deduction per week from their paycheck. Some of us use the inusrance, others of us are lucky enough to not have to use the insurance...but it is inusrance that is ALSO subsidized by the two former employers of record per unemployed individual.

Welfare is a necessary evil in my eyes and that, too should be regulated better.

Social Security? Nothing more than the government one day saying "you people are not to be trusted with your money, so we will hold it for you until you need it"

Ironically, we have found that the government was not to be trusted with our savings!

Well you are reasonable, unlike others on this site who say end all of these programs and stop the draining of "my" money when they themselves take part in similar programs. That was the only point I was trying to make.

You need to go study the history of this country and understand WHY these programs were started.

When they were NOT in place the elderly who had no opportunity to save for their retirements were living in chicken coops or the street.


We became dependent on these programs because they were the BEST way to insure people had some dignity in old age.

Gee, midcan! Sorry to hear of your recent head trauma. While you're checking off things from your "To be a Conservative" list, you might consider gun control. Now that you're a card carrying John Bircher, think about what a great society we could have if we just armed ourselves to the teeth and shot for the sake of the second amendment! Public safety be damned, if you got your piece, then it's up to you to protect yourself from the other armed citizens.
