But even at the worst case scenario, let's say Trump was knowledgable of the payoff, it's still not against the law. And even if it was considered a campaign law violation, it's only punishable by a fine.

And that is rhe point. Trump and Republicans will deny citizens a tax break for selfish greedy reasons. Unless you provide the video or transcript, I have no idea what he said. But based on what he has said in the past, he was likely giving a legal opinion--not a personal one. We all know OJ killed his wife and lover, but the question would be was there enough evidence to convict him on it?
