How can you spot an economy, indeed a civilization, in collapse?

Ted Fischer, a professor of anthropology and director of the Center for Latin American Studies at Vanderbilt University, studies the ways cultural values influence economic decisions. Today on Making Sen$e he interviews the “real Indiana Jones,” aka Arthur Demarest, about the fate of our own society. Demarest, also an anthropology professor at Vanderbilt University, sees signs of collapse.

Think Tank #1: Lessons from the Collapse, An Interview with Arthur Demarest
DECEMBER 16, 2014 BY EDWARD F. FISCHER

Note: This is the first in a projected series of podcasts. I’m still working on style and editing, and any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I did a written interview with Arthur on this same topic that was published on the PBS NewsHour Making$ense site. This audio interview with Arthur took place in Nashville after he and I had completed most of the text interview by email, although some of this audio conversation was incorporated into the text version. Thanks to Bart Victor and Jon Shaynefor the initial idea and to Jon for his help with the first round of questions.

Record highs for the stock market?
Jobs?
Housing starts?
Economic growth?
Nutters blathering on about the end times?

If jake thinks it's crazy I need to listen to it....but way too tired now. six pounds of tenderloin, all the fixin's......chocolate cake and ice cream...8 bloody Mary's...I'm goin to bed. Merry Christmas.and to all a good night.!

Crazy talk, Barry.

Move along.
Wrong I suspect but not crazy. Per capita tech advances peaked in the 1870s however new interactions between and quantitative improvements to existing technologies keeps keeping on. That sends out really odd signals that do conform to most models of social collapse.

A real crash, however, is guaranteed if we continue in an economy of eternal warfare.

Collapse seems like a rather extreme conclusion. It's decline though no doubt.

did ya see that fight in byu's bowl game, wow, that was epic. LOL
The BYU fans apparently are non-apologetic.

The USU alumni, as we collectively always do, just go crazy when our Aggies go into Happy Valley and slap shit the Cougs all over the place.

Tom S., you know nothing about economics, so your opinion is worth than a piece of used toilet paper.

Close to 50% of the population is on government handouts, there are massive regulation and confiscation of wealth, national debt over 17 TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTrillion dollars...........

.

Economic collapse is when your dollar is worth more as toilet paper than it is as currency.

Yeah...

But the collapse of the culture comes along way prior to the collapse of the currency. The US Culture began to decline in earnest, in the 1960s... this came one generation behind the insurgency of European communists who fled to the US in the late 1930s, through out the 40s and into the mid 50s, culminating in the 60 and 70s counter-culture.

Western Civilization began to decay in the late 18th Century, with the French Revolution... . The deceitful nature of the Revolutionary language is a noteworthy clue, the better examples being the term of absurdity: Reactionary. A meaningless context designed to isolate the subject.

This began the decay of soundly reasoned, sustainable morality, the foundation of personal decay, therefore the foundation of cultural decay.

The Advocacy to Normalize Sexual Abnormality is among the last of the signs that a culture is no longer viable... and that collapse is imminent.

Nonsense.

People have perceived 'signs of collapse' of civilization for thousands of years, never to manifest.

Fearful reactionaries often incorrectly infer change as a sign of 'collapse,' when instead it's the natural course of healthy societal development.

Close to 50% are UE or don't make quite enough to get off food stamps totally, the rich aren't taxed enough, others too much- and under paid, 6-7 trillion spent Pub cronies and victims since the Booosh meltdown. NOW a full recovery since the end of phony Pub crises. Civilization will be just fine , especially without another W. Booosh/CHENEY.
