"These are the biggest mid-latitude glaciers in the world," John Shroder of the University of Nebraska-Omaha said. "And all of them are either holding still, or advancing."

When Shroder and a team of researchers examined satellite imagery of the region's glaciers dating back to 1960, they found that 87 glaciers had surged forward during that time, sliding down into lower elevations. An analysis of gravity signatures in the region also suggests the glaciers are growing in mass, and have been since at least 1980.

The team's work will be published in a forthcoming issue of Annals of Glaciology.

Surging glaciers are common and do not necessarily mean a glacier is growing in overall size. But the fact that dozens of them have all surged in the same region hints that larger climate forces are at work.

"It looks like it's the Westerlies," Shroder said, referring to strong jets of wind that pour from west to east in a belt around the planet. Though he can't say for certain, the winds appear to be carrying more moisture from the warming Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea eastward.

If that's true, some of the moisture would fall into the region around the Caspian Sea. But as the winds rise into Karakoram's frigid heights, any remaining water would come down as snow, feeding the glaciers.

"We will see regional patterns like this developing as climate change alters precipitation," said Andrew Fountain of Portland State University in Oregon.

Yup. The global warmers will cherry pick some glaciers as retreating due to warming. Then they will just as easily explain that the many glaciers that are in fact growing are doing so because of..........global warming.

Just as in Continental USA, the glaciers on Shasta are presently growing because Shasta is getting more precip, the glaciers in that part of the Himalyas are growing. But most of the glaciers in the Himalyas are rapidly shrinking, as that very article states.

All it would take is a change in weather patterns such that more moisture was directed toward those mountains.

The term global warming might be technically correct, but it confuses people, too.

The Upsala glacier has retreating about 60m per year over the last 60 years and this rate appears to be accelerating. In the last 40 years, the area of the South Patagonian Ice Field has diminished by about 500km2. The Soler and Tyndall Glaciers also appear to have lost mass, while the Pio XI glacier in Patagonia is larger now than at any time in the last 6,000 years.

Europe
For the Alps as a whole, the glacial area since about 1850 has been reduced by 30-40 percent, with about a 50 percent reduction in ice volume. However, this has been counterbalanced by the recent growth of some larger glaciers in the Alps such as the Grosse Aletsch in Switzerland and many Scandinavian glaciers, resulting in a small net increase in glacial ice over the last 30 years.

Antarctica and sub-Antarctic Islands
The alpine glaciers of the Dry Valleys in Antarctic have fluctuated with no apparent trends. Numerous glaciers along the Antarctic Peninsula are in retreat. Glaciers in many sub-Antarctic islands are also in retreat, for example, some small glaciers in Heard Island have decreased by up to 65%.
