The key word is choice. As long as a woman chooses to wear it on her own , there's nothing wrong with it. It can represent freedom especially if you live in a society that encourages you to wear less clothing. It is also freedom from being objectified.
I am Muslim but I don't wear hijab regularly. I occasionally wear if I go to Friday prayers or other islalmic events. When I do wear it I feel free from being objectified. I sometimes get cat called by men or guys trying to get with me. When I wear hijab I don't have to deal with any of the nonsense.
Hijab can be oppressive if a woman is forced to wear it.

I think that MOST Muslim women in this country can go where they want without a male escort. I see quite a few Muslim women in the hajib who shop at WalMart either by themselves, with their children, or sometimes with other women most of the time. Interestingly enough, did you know that head coverings like the hajib, as well as the long robes they wear actually have a practical use? It seems that dressing like that is useful for keeping your body temperature cool in the desert, because it doesn't allow the hot air to get close to your body and the movement of the clothing helps to fan you. Now? People have marginalized their way of dress from being part of their culture and survival over many years to just being a symbol of a religion they fear because they don't understand it.

The 'hijab' is not required in the Koran. It is a preference. As with all religions, things don't have to be facts to be 'true' in practice. In general, Islam's message is that men are weak and women must avoid eliciting impure actions from males. It is, however, very easy to see how this looks like suppressing females. Wearing this garb declares a politico-religious position, at least in the Western World. Openly declaring a political or religious position is a freedom that, as with all freedoms, carries responsibilities and consequences. Cultural pressure being what it is, choice is not always clearly 'free'. So, people end up making statements they may not be fully aware of.
